Passing & receieving warm up (10 mins)

Area:

set up a square/rectangle 10m x 10m 0r 15m x 15m depending on 8 or 12 players.

Equipment:

cones, 1/2 amount of balls to players

Aim:

players without a ball stand in a gate. Players with a ball dribble around and pass to a player in a gate who doesn't have a ball. The recevier then turns away and goes to find another player standing in a gate. The player who passed initially now takes their place by standing in the gate.

Key points:

emphasise the importance of having the ball under control, talking between receiver and passer. When you turn away, turn with speed and purpose.

Passing, receiving & scanning (20 mins)

Area:

create corridors with cones, poles or lines approx 5m wide and 10m long. Each corridor as 4 players.

Equipment:

cones, discs, poles & balls.

Objective:

To improve scanning before recieving the ball to make better choices on which direction to turn.

Each corridor has a feeder either end (red), a reciever in the centre (red) and a defender in the centre (blue). The blue defender has 3 options to stand. He can stand to the right (corridor1), the left (corridor 2) or directly behind (corridor 3). Once they have chosen they are not allowed to move. The red reciever in the centre of the corridor scans to see which position the defender is standing and then calls for the ball from the feeder. The feeder feeds the ball to the red reciever (shown in corridor 1). and the player turns away into space away from the defender and passes to the feeder at the oposite end. the reciever returns to the middle and the practice is repeated. If the defender stands to the left (corridor 2) the reciever simply turns in the opposite direction to what they would have in corridor 1. The only change is if the defender choses to stand directly behind. If they stand behind the receiver must take a touch away from the defender back to the feeder who fed the ball and pass the ball back to them. Let each player have about 1-1.5mins each then rotate positions so everyone is a feeder, receiver & defender.

Key bpoints:

Focus on a quick scan just before calling for the ball. Turn with purpose and speed in knowing what choice you have made.

Progression:

Make it harder by allowing the defender to put light pressure on the reciever once they have recieved the ball.

Passing, recieving, moving off the ball (stamina) (20 mins)

Area:

use centre circle or use cones/discs to create circle.

Equipmment:

Balls (1 per outside player) cones/discs if needed.

Objective:

working as a pair in the middle, one player leads and the other follows. From position 1 the leader (blue) runs and calls for a ball from a feeder on the outside. When he recieves he must control and stop the ball (position 2) He then turns out and moves to another feeder for a ball and repeats (position 3). The role of the follower is to shadow bout not tackle the reciever. Once the reciever has stopped the ball dead the follower passes the ball to a feeder on the outside (position 2) then turns to follow the leader again (position 3). The leader is trying to loose the follower by working as fast as possible, changing direction and setting the pace. work for 1- 1.5mins depending on fitness then swap the pairs. Once all pairs have had a turn the leaders and followers in each pair swap roles and the practice is repeated.

Key Points:

Emphasise changing direction and not going round in a circle as changing direction multiple times makes it more difficult for the follower. This is very tiring if performed correctly. Encourage the pairs to work as hard as possible to improve fitness.

Progression:

Increase the duration of time each pair works for.

Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Jailbreak

Jailbreak (20 mins)

Jailbreak

- Split the group into 2 teams with 1 goal keeper

- There is a jail for each team - use 4 cones

- the coach stands either left or right of the player and the player receives the ball from a team mate. The player scans and turns into space and head towards to goal and shoot before the discs/line or cones. The player will be under pressure from the coach so they get their shot away quickly. If they Miss they go in jail. If they score they can chose a opponent player to go in jail. If you have a team mate in jail you can chose to either break a team mate out or put an opponent in jail.the loosing team is the team who has all its players in jail and can not take anymore shots.

Technical Points:

- Step into strike

- Use of insole, laces or inside foot to striek the ball

- Focus on the ball when striking
