Zoo (10 mins)
Organization:
1. 15 x 20 yd grid set up as shown
2. One ball per player
Instructions/Story:
1. Coach asks players if they want to go to the soccer zoo. Before "entering the zoo", coach reminds players that they have to always use their feet and not their hands to move and stop the ball.
2. "The first exhibit is the penguins, let's go!" Coach models dribbling to a corner of the pod and players follow. "Penguins keep the ball between their feet and waddle, and the ball goes from foot to foot. Can you dribble like a penguin?" Encourage player to "turn the ball" as they waddle.
3. After penguins, go see the elephants. Same technique as penguins but with bigger steps.
4. Then go see the zebras. Tell players to put one foot in front by the ball and the other behind. ALWAYS MODEL HOW!!! Tell players to gallop with their ball, an encourage them to keep their ball close!! Then switch to the "other foot". Again, encourage turning the ball, and for this animal, it is encouraged to tell players to use both sides (inside and outside) of their feet.
5. Finally, go to see the big cats: lions, tigers, etc. For this exhibit, tell players to prowl while they dribble. Model with a low stance (knees bent butt down) and use arms to "push aside the tree branches in the jungle". After that, show players how to "pounce" by kicking the ball in front, chasing it down, and controlling it with feet.
6. Players can visit the exibits again, if they want.
Coaching Points:
1. Penguins - Dribbling the ball between your feet, small touches, control the ball
2. Elephants - Dribbling the ball between your feet, big touches, control the ball
3. Zebras - Gallop with the ball, one foot in front of the other
4. Big Cats - Prowl when dribbling, low stance (knees bent butt down)
Progressions:
1. Change the different animals, allow players to make up which animals they use
