Warm Up - Protect the Cones (5 mins)

Objective - Raise muscle temp/HR while introducing 1v1 actions

  • 1) Rondo with one central GK, small grid
  • 2) Outside servers circulate ball with feet, looking to knock over cones in centre
  • 3) Each GK goes for ~45s before rotating
  • 4) Give keepers the chance to stretch between reps
Coaching Points
  • Low, compact set
  • Small, quick steps
  • Timing when to close down (slow pass, bad touch, etc)

Handling Activation - Basic handling w/3 cone footwork

Objective - Reenforce good handling and footwork techniques

  • 1) GK performs footwork through cones, moving toward server
  • 2) GK takes service (in bubble)

  • Progression - work through different footwork (forward, weave, 2 forward-1 back) and handling (W/contour, basket, scoop)

Coaching Points

  • Good handling habits - watch it in, body behind ball, stay on top of ball, catch ball in front
  • Footwork - balanced, compact and direct. Push yourself to be quick as possible

1v1 Activity - Block/Spread w/ Angled Service

Objective - Build understanding of when and how to close space in 1v1 situations

  • 1) GK takes angled service
  • 2) GK moves forward through poles to face mid range 1v1
Coaching Points
  • Set position - get LOW (this is so important, they stay WAAYYY too upright in 1v1s), hands lower and wider
  • Closing space - gradual and small steps if attacker is in control with head up, accelarate to gain space if they take poor touch or look down
  • Make sure weight stays forward, they remain balanced, and they drop/extend the correct (inside) leg
  • Call keeper if smothering

Objective - Read cues to determine correct action in short/mid range 1v1's

  • 1) Keeper comes forward and sets in A-frame set between poles
  • 2) Keeper receives low extension service
  • 3) S1 squares for S2, who MUST take a touch
  • 4) GK must read touch and act in a short/mid 1v1 scenario
Coaching Points
  • Make sure appropriate sets are being used - A-frame for extension, engaged for 1v1
  • Decision making - make sure they understand cues (weight/direction of touch, forwards head up or down)
