Primary Focus Practical 7 / General Practice / Defending the Switch of Play.
Understand when and how to defend a switch of play based onthe pressure applied by the defending team
Organisation:
Two neutral players (yellow) are positioned at each end of the pitch and are free to move along the line. Four mini goals are used and are place in each corner of the pitch. Coach to have plenty of balls ready to serve the ball.
Area Size:
30m x 18m with a half way line at 15m.
Player No's:
- 10 players. 4v4 + 2 neutral players.
Timings:
- 5x4 mins / 1min rest
Explanation:
-The ball starts with the neutral player and in in possession team (blue) must work the ball between their team to switch play and find the other neutral player. Once the ball moves from neutral player to player, the in possession team can then score in the mini goals.
- The (red) team defend the opposition team switching the ball. If the (red) team win back possession they immediately find a goal to score in.
Progressions:
- Players can move freely but a minimum of two passes need to be made in a half before the switch of play happens.
- Reds win a point in they intercept the ball in the half it starts in.
- When reds win the ball, they have five seconds to score.
- Players can only switch play playing around and through.
Regressions:
- Target players can directly switch the ball over to each other.
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
- (In pos) switch five times and score within the four minutes
- (Out pos) Win the ball in the half it starts / win the ball and score in 5 five seconds
Key Points:
- Speed/angle of press
- Supporting as a unit
- Force the direction of play
- Defend narrow
-Breaking passing lines
Problems:
- Can the (blues) utilise the width and switch within the half to then switch directly.
- Can the (blues) move the ball at speed and play into spaces. The ball may have to be recycled in order to switch.
Interventions:
- Concurrent
- Terminal
- Walk Through
