Social Communication through body positioning and with the goalie |
Focus: Fast controlled approach, body positioning
Methodology: Progressive technical
Set-up: Set upon large grid 15 x 25. Alongside one endline place a goal in the middle and two poles at the corner. Also place two poles diagionally across from the first set on the other end of the field. Split the team into two groups. One, the attackers, will start on along the goal line directly across one set of poles. The other, the defenders, start on the touchline opposite the goal line and across from other set of poles.
Descrption: On the coaches call, the attacker will dribble with speed across the field, through the poles, and towards goal. As soon as the attacking player touches the ball with his first touch, the defender will sprint across the field around the set of poles on the goal line and sprint across the field to close down the space with the attacker. The defender will look to defend the dribble and steal the ball or block the shot.
Coaching Points: Fast controlled approach before getting the body in a good position. Body position should be a 45 degree staggered stance to the ball, bent knees with weight on the balls of the feet, chest over the feet, low center of gravity. Upon approach be mindful to the distance of pressure and communicate with the goalie if need be.

Defending the dribble; first defender with shadowing and active defense (5 mins)
Focus: Fast controlled approach and body positioning
Methodology: Primarily progressive technical with a little bit of progressive tactical
Set-up: Set up three grids all alongside eachother. The two outside grids are 10x15 and the inside grid is 5 x15. Mark the lines with cones and along the endline of the inside grid place one goal. Split the team into two groups of defenders who start on both sides of the goal and attackers who start with the ball on the endline opposite the goal.
Descrption: To start, the attacking player will dribble the ball to the endline. As soon as the attacking player touches the ball, the defensive player will quickly close down the space to defend the dribble. For the first couple of runs the defender cannot steal the ball. After the approach and body position have been practiced, the coach will announce that the defender can steal the ball.
Coaching Points: Fast controlled approach before getting the body in a good position. Body position should be a 45 degree staggered stance to the ball, bent knees with weight on the balls of the feet, chest over the feet, low center of gravity. Upon approach be mindful to the distance of pressure.
