Defending a free kick from this distance, there is 3 players in the wall, and the remaining players in the box, marking the opposition. With 2 opponents either side of the free kick, if it is played short to either of those players, it is vital that the player in the wall closest to the ball presses as quickly as possible to stop them from having a chance on goal.

When defending a free kick from further out, a wall isn't necessary, this means that the defending team can have more players marking the opposition. In this situation, there are 3 opposition players stood outside the 18 yard box, and normally the defending team try to keep the opposition outside the box to allow the keeper more space to come out if the ball goes over the top too far. 3 defenders go player for player, marking the 3 opposition, there is 1 opposition further away from the box, so the remaining player needs to keep an eye out because if the ball is played short to this opposition player, they are the first to press them, but also need to stay near the box incase the ball is played down the line for a runner.
