Individual Footskills (10 mins)

Set Up: Every player inside a large zone, every player has a ball. Each player dribbles the ball around avoiding contact with other players. On the coach’s signal, the players perform the footskill that was demonstrated.

Every time a player does a skill encourage them to try to dribble to split two other players, if they perform the skill and dribble between two other players they get a point. If they bump into somebody else or lose control of their ball they lose all their points.

  • Skills to work on:
    •  Patterns: Zig-Zag, Roll, Inside outside two feet.
    • Turning: Cruyff, Pull Cruyff, review moves we have already covered
    • Forward: Stab Push, Scissors, 1-Foot V-Pull, 2-Foot V Pull, La Croqueta (some people call it cut catch)

Coaching Points:

  • Always looking for space when dribbling
  • Accelerate into space after doing move
  • Keep ball close when dribbling

1v1 Goal Competition (10 mins)

Set up: Use 2 fields as shown in the diagram, approximately 25*16. Each field has a full sized goal on one endline. Play 1v1 with the attacker starting with the ball and dribbling at the defender and trying to score. If the defender wins the ball then they get a point for dribbling across the opposite endline.

Every time the ball goes out of bounds or a goal is scored the next players waiting start a new 1v1 game.

Play for 2 minutes then switch sides so that both teams get to attack/defend.

Coaching Points:

  • Engage the defender - dribble directly at them to allow yourself to beat them going either side
  • Try a skill move - not overly concerned with players losing the ball but would prefer for them to be brave and creative to beat the defender quickly
  • Pick your spot when shooting - take a quick look to see where the goalkeeper is just before you shoot so you can increase chance of scoring by avoiding the GK

3v3 Outta Here to Goals (15 mins)

Play 3v3 to big goals in a 30*25 area. When the ball goes out, a goal is scored, or time goes too long – three new players for each team enter the field. Have the players initiate the game with a pass across to the other team.

Coaching Points:

  • Where should your first touch go? In the direction you want to go next to dribble/pass/shoot
  • Where can you go to receive the ball from your teammate? In a space where there are no defenders between you and the ball
  • What should you do when you have the ball and see space leading towards the goal? Dribble and try to shoot before defenders take away the space.
  • How do you know where the space is? Looking up while dribbling/looking around if my teammate has the ball

4v4/3v3 games (30 mins)

Set up: Create 2 fields approximately 40*30 beside each other to play 2 games of 4v4 simultaneously. Play games for approximately 3-4 minutes then have the teams rotate between the both fields so that every teams plays someone different and gets a chance to play on both fields.

  • Field 1- Has 2 large goals with goalkeepers. On this field play 4v4/3v3 plus a GK for each team.
  • Field 2 - Play a 4 goal game to small cone goals on each endline. Play 4v4/3v3 depending on the number of players you have available.

Questions for players:

1. How can we work the ball forwards into the opponents' half? Find/create openings to dribble or pass forward

2. Where should we pass/combine to go forward? Away from pressure/defenders by keeping possession

3. How do you know where the defenders are? How do you know where the space is? Looking up when I have the ball

4. How can you help your teammate when he/she has the ball? Get into space to make the field bigger
