Description

A block tackle can be played in several ways. The biggest difference is one- or double handed. Ablock tackle is very effective for closing a player down or to protect the feet in the circle. Be sure tohave a diagonal stance to enable your self to pick up a running player.Always start defending a 1V1 using a neutral stick position (stick blade open - open stick grip). Thenswitch to one handed backhand or forehand or double handed forehand by turning the stick with theright hand. Always focus on the proper stick position.

Grip: From Open stick grip to Basic Grip

Body: Stay low, eyes on the ball

Stick: Low at 25ºPlace square on the ball line

Action: Close the player down by decreasingthe available space. Beware of going toosoon to leave forehand space open ortoo late to leave backhand space open.  Tight grip to block and win the ball

Ball: Halfway the lower part of the stick. Therefore the stick must be low

  • Introduce the correct block tackle technique to the group.
  • Get players to practice with a partner - one player dribbles in a straight line towards their parter and the other makes a block tackle. Then swap over roles.
  • Coaches to go around the group and make sure they are tackling correctly.
  • Once technique is there, introduce the idea of not diving in and being mobile.
  • Get players to practice with a partner - player dribbling should try to eliminate and the tackler must adjust to make a tackle.

Top Court Bottom Court

Top Court Bottom Court

  • Set out a number of different 'courts' (rectangles).
  • In each there should be two players stood on opposite ends of the box. One player with the ball and one without.
  • The player with the ball (attacker) must dribble the ball under control to the opposite end of the box. The player without the ball (defender) must make a tackle and gain possession. Players swap roles each go.
  • Points are given either for the attacker getting to the other end or the defender making a tackle.
  • At the end of 45 seconds the player with the most points moves up a court towards the top court and the other moves down a court to the bottom court. If a player loses on bottom court, they stay there. If a player wins on top court, they stay there.
