What: a 2v2 game to develop defensive pressure and cover. Two pairs of players play to two small goals. When the ball leaves the playing area by going into touch, over the end-line or a goal is scored, the two pairs "get out of here" and two new pairs are played in by the coach.
In any activity using small goals, the goals must be large enough to prevent the defending team from simply stepping into the goal to defend. The incentive should be to step toward the ball when defending.
Why: focus on the first and second defenders preventing the penetrating pass.
Where: any third of the field.
Who: any pair in any line.
When: transition and defensive phase of the game.
Periodization:
# players Work interval Recovery Reps
2 players 1 to 2.5 minutes 1-2 minutes 3 to 8
General “Rule of Thumb,” when the Speed of Play in an activity drops, its time to recover.
The Smallest number of players determines the duration of an activity.
Space will effect player actions, which will affect speed of play.
