Activity 1

Area:

Create a square with cones, poles or dics. The size of the square depends on the number of players. for exmple 16 players approx 20m.

Equipment:

Cones/poles/discs, balls and bibs.

Objective:

Split the players into 2 teams. For our example for 16 players have 2 of each colour on each side of the square on the outside. The remaining 4 players from each colour are on the inside. Each player on the outside starts with a ball. The players in the middle call and come and receive a ball from a player in their coloured team on the outside. They then turn and look for another person on the outside in their colour to pass to. Once pass completed they then go and receive another pass from team mate on the outside in same colour. At this stage the reds and blues are working unapposed but looking to avoid each other. After a few minutes the players on the outside and inside swap.

Keypoints:

Specifically we are looking for a player to run towards the ball, look over their shoulder and then turn and make a positive touch into space, head up and look for team mate on outside free. If they can pass directly, they call and then execute pass. If they are not free then they change their mind and dribble the ball to a point where they see a different player free.

Progression:

After all players have had a turn, impliment a points scoring system where unforced errors are penalised. Noticed unforced errors of 2 ball going to same player on outside because of not scanning or lack of communication or poor pass gain a penalty point for that colour. The team with the most penalty points loses.

Progression 2:

Select 2 players (1 from each team). Give them yellow bibs or different colour the the others. They then put pressure and try to sneak up behind players who are not scanning and cause problems without tackling. Pause and swap players to rotate. The points scoring system continues.

Activity 2

Area:

Split the pitch into 3rd's with cones or discs.

Equipment:

Cones/discs, balls, bibs

Objective:

Split players into 2 teams. Depending on number of players will determin ratios in each 3rd. Put equal numbers from each team up to 3 from each team in each 3rd. If you have 16 create overload either end. One end for blue and red the other end. (see pic for example). The objective is fully opposed and to try and pass the ball from one end to the other through the 3rd's keeping possession. If a long pass is on then the middle 3rd can be missed if the pass is on. Regularly rotate the middle players with players from the ends.

Keypoints:

Looking for players to recieve the ball on the move, scanning constantly, trying to get on the half turn in the middle 3rd. If player is marking tight then shield the ball and manoeuvre into space or make a pass. Really important players watching are not sucked into the line on the edge of their 3rd. Move, create the space and come to the ball and not be stood still tight to the line under pressure from behind.

Progression:

After a few minutes play to get used to the task impliment a scoring system. Each switch of play from one end to the other through scores a point.

Progression 2:

Add another ball so 2 balls are in play.

Progression 3:

Play a match with goals with 1 ball. Players are locked in to 3rd's still. If numbers are not even, keep middle area even and overload ends in favour of attackers (more attackers in the end they are shooting). Rotate players so they play in defensive, middle and attacking 3rd's.
