Defending corners: Zonal

this is the position for an outswinging corner from the right , to guard against an inswinging corner from either side everyone steps backwards an extra yard giving more space infront to attack the ball and less space behind us to be attacked

2 players on the inside of the post facing outwards defending the line. NOT standing in the 6 yard box touching the post. these players will generally be the players who aren't very strong in the air.

players 1,2,3,4 positioned diagonally across the 6 yard box with 3 yards between them with a 1 yard step forwaerds.

the keeper is left with space react, adjust their feet and to claim or punch the ball if needed.

player 5 positioned on the back of the 6 yard box to protect against long corners high to the back post.

players 6,7,8 positioned diagonally between the 6 yeard box an penalty spot. 3 yards between them and a 1 yard step forwards. between the gaps of the line behind.

the players in the shaded area 2-3-7 need to be the tallest and or strongest headers of the ball as they are defending the most dangerous area.

players 1 and 6 are first to react to a short corner. in that event players 7 and 8 will shuffle over 3 yards more centrally.

if the ball is played to the edge or outside the box. players 4-8 and 6 press the ball with pace while player 1 watches for a pass back to the corner taker. 5 watches for a switch of play and players 3-7 and 2 defend any runners or attempted chipped or looped balls back into the box.

if the ball is cleared it is down to players 4-8-6 to press the ball and break if won back. these players will generally be some of the faster players depending on opposition. only when the ball is won after the clearence do the players on the posts clear the lines QUICKLY and get back to position asap.

all players attack the ball and not worry too much about tussling with attackers. stand firm in teh correct position and attack the ball.

Screen 3 (20 mins)

Zonal defence "A to Z" stand for the shape shown by the blue lines and the approach being zonal.

players 1-2-3-4 in the shaded area must be the tallest and strongest headers of the ball.

player 7 and 8 support player 9 if the corner is played short. player 5 or 6 then steps into their positions depending on which side the corner is being taken from.

if the ball is cleared it is down to player 10 to press or hold the ball. players 9-7-2-8 press the ball and the passing options depending on the angle or direction and distance of the clearence

the shape of this defensive set up stays the same regardless of which side the corner is taken from. if the taker is an inswinger then all players drop off an extra yard so they have more space to attack the ball and less space behind us to defend.
