Warm Up/Passing Practice (15 mins)

Warm Up

Rules

This game is a version of over the river with passive defending only.

Players are separated into three teams of 3-4 players depending on numbers.

Red team starts with the ball, with each player touching it before playing to the yellows in the opposite half, who do the same.

Blue team applies passive pressure to the red team, blocking passing lanes but not intercepting or making tackles. Once done pressing, blues stay in half where red side were, while reds run across to apply passive pressure to yellows.

Play continues in a wave. Intensity and pace of running to increase as game progresses.

Behaviours to encourage

Forward runs when not in possession of the ball to receive ball beyond defensive line and closer to target on opposite side.

Take touch on back foot where possible to play forward.

Strong weight of pass. Play passes/take touches on both dominant and non-dominant foot.

Progressions

Players must play on a certain number of touches to encourage fast play, movement off ball.

Passes must be played on the deck.

Players to pass with non-dominant foot (step-up).

Defending team becomes active, defenders continue as until they win possession, or force a mistake from one of the BP teams who then take their place.

Note: Coach should separate defenders into pressing players and covering players (in channel) if teams are imbalanced or BP players are struggling to keep possession.

Positioning Game (20 mins)

Rules
5 v 5 possession game.

Team starting with the ball (red) maintains possession in one half of a grid with a 5 v 3 advantage separated by a small barrier keeping it for as long as possible.

When blue win the ball they must transfer it into the other grid, where two resting blue players are waiting. The aim is to keep the ball as long as possible. Three red players move across immediately as defenders, with two resting in opposite half.

Points are scored for holding the ball for 10 passes or more without an interception (attacking team) and winning the ball in under 5 passes before transferring it across (defending team).

If any team knocks the ball out of play it restarts with the other team at the coach's discretion.

Team task: When we win the ball can we play forward as quickly as possible and make quick forward runs to support the players in the attacking area?

Player tasks: Can you take your first touch forward on a change of possession to play forward quickly?

When our teammate wins possession of the ball can players off the ball move forward to become an attacking threat?

As the ball is played into an attacking player, can I get forward quickly to support my 9/10?

Can I make runs wide when appropriate to open the field of play?

Progressions:

Restriction on number of touches for blue or red team or both if defenders are struggling to win possession of the ball. (Step up).

Add goals for defenders or attackers to score into on completion of certain number of passes. Coach to play new ball in after attempt on goal.

Defending team must wait before ball is touched before entering opposition half (Step down).

Game Training (30 mins)

Rules

Pitch is 45m by 30m, separated into even thirds, with offside rule in place.

Red team has four outfield players in a 1-2-1 formation and a goalkeeper shooting into two small goals, while blue team has five players in a 1-3-1 formation, shooting into a big goal past the goalkeeper.

Pts: Each goal is worth as much as the number of attacking players in the final third (box) when the goal is scored. In order for a goal to count all attacking players must be in the attacking thirds.

Team Task: When one of our players receives the ball close to goal can we make forward runs close to goal to create a goalscoring opportunity?

Player tasks: 9 - Can you get level and outside your marker and move forward and away from them when a teammate is able to play a ball into the box?

7/11: When our central players receive the ball can we move forward and wide to open space to play and provide options for a forward pass?

If players are not in the area can we keep possession of the ball until support arrives or play backwards to receive?

CM: Can we make a late run to provide our teammates a shooting option at the top of the box?

Note: With limited numbers, this game is intended to be all-out attack and transition, with a focus on getting players into attacking and goalscoring positions.

Only stop play to address issues in checklist (Start, Organisation, Attitude, Ability, Understanding, Shape, Self) or to highlight a piece of positive play.

Observe:

Does the 9 make forward runs as soon as a teammate has the ability to play a through ball?

Look for wide players to run forward to receive behind defensive line.

Does central midfielder run forward to support 9 or winger in possession?

How many times does a central player have oppositions both sides of him to play the ball forward to a teammate close to goal?

How many chances does each team create inside the opponent's area with multiple players in the box/scoring zone?

Note: With limited numbers, this game is intended to be all-out attack and transition, with a focus on getting players into attacking and goalscoring positions.
