Defending Positions (5 mins)

Organisation

Create a pitch as above and place red cones on the pitch to indicate the players positions when defending, and blue cones to indicate positions when playing from the back. Note - blue cones are set out with a view to creating angles between players - avoid playing on the same line.

No need for CB's.

Instructions

GK will commence the routine, but once commenced, play can start from any player - from time to time, players will pass the ball into the coach, who will determine who to play the ball so.

However, if the coach passes the ball to the GK at any time, players must regain their defensive positions and then look to spread out into their attacking positions.

Coach will provide a passing sequence which the players must follow eg. 2, 7,8,10,11, 6, 3 GK etc.

Instruct the players to use the cone as a guide only - don't remain on the cone - move away from it to create triangle/passing lines.

To begin, instuct players to regain their defensive shape whenever GK gets the ball, but then, to adopt attacking positions, as indicated.

Coaching Points

Movement to create passing line - avoid being on the same passing line as another player.

Receive the ball on the front foot.

Quick transition from defence to attack and attack to defence.

Avoid 7 & 11 or 2 & 3 coming in to narrow the width.

No.6 will be the deepest player when attacking without the CB's.

One or two touch only.

Progression 1 (20 mins)

Organisation

Introduce 3 x blue players - 2 attackers and a MF player.

Instructions

White players to simply retain possession.

If Blue players gain possession, they have 10 secs to score. Restart is via coach playing the ball in to any white player.

Coaching Points

Note the area to be covered by the No.8 & No.10 - degree of overlap - need to rotate from time to time - always looking to maintain passing lines and triangles.

No.10 to drop to try to receive the ball if necessary. Get between the opponents lines.

Switch of play via GK - GK to adopt a sweeper role when in possession.

Keep 2&3, 7&11 wide. Thsi is a tactic we may employ against weaker opposition. Against stronger opposition, we may look to make 7 & 11 to come narrow to fill MF - and the MF unit (7, 8 & 11 - to slide as necessary.

REMEMBER - in transition fro mdefence to attack, make the first 2 or 3 passes 100 % safe to buy time to get our attacking formation.
