Final Third - In Possession (Specific Practice into SSG)

Principles

Width and Depth

Risk Taking

Final Pass

Finishing

Specific Practice (8 mins)

Organisation

  • Pitch up to centre circle 'D', taperd in, 3-4 yards outside edge of the box line used as the 'final third' zone
  • Pitch made slightly narrower (around 5-8 yards either side)
  • 8 v 8 (Goal keeper for each team with 7 outfield for both)
  • 1 common player to play on the the team who's in possession (plays as a 10 for team in possession)
  • Reds (attacking) set up in a 2-4-1 cutting off the full back area
  • Blues (defending) playing a 4-2-1 the midfield 2 are CM's with a lone striker
  • Reds (attacking) to score a goal is exactly how you would in a game, scoring past the blues keeper
  • Blues (defending) score by kicking the ball into the hands of their keeper in the zone on the half way line (when they win the ball back they get 10 seconds to hit the GK or drill re sets from the reds GK)

Key Factors

  • When reds enter the final third zone' they have 10 seconds to get a shot away in an attempt to play quickly and score a goal, if they play out of it to switch play then the 10 seconds will start again every time they enter
  • Encouragement to move the ball up the pitch quickly and positively in order to get into the final third
  • What happens when we get there? Cross, Shot, Switch?
  • When the ball enters the zone, what do other players do? Striker stays central, opposite winger drives in, CM and common get into box to create a goal scoring chance
  • Blues first part will press the ball and play a high line (4 mins)
  • Second part will drop off and defend deep (4 mins)

SSG (15 mins)

Principles

Width and Depth

Risk Taking

Final Pass

Finishing

Small Sided Game (15 mins)

Organisation

  • Same amount of players, 8v8 with a common player playing for side in possession
  • No 'target zone' for the blues to play into, it is now a full size goal for them to score in (6 seconds to hit ball into number 9 to encourage them not to keep the ball, then an extra 5 seconds to score a goal)
  • Pitch remains tapered, but 'final third zone' removed to create realism and 'free play'
  • Pitch still narrower to create more 'final third' moments for the reds to work on
  • Both teams set up in the same system, Reds 2-4-1 and Blues 4-2-1

Key Factors
  • As the pitch size is the same as the Specific, identifying where the 'final third' is and understanding where the players are in relevance to it throughout the session
  • No time limit in the final third but asking the players is that still relevant in this part?
  • Ball movement speed to get into the final third as quick as we can
  • Runs off the ball, Overloads, Crosses, Shots
  • Off the ball how to players get into the final third to create a goal scoring chance
  • Shot decision, header, volley, set?
  • First part defending team press high (7 mins)
  • Second part defending team drop off (7 mins)
