Session Aims

To demonstrate benefits of using combination play to make progress up the pitch and to demonstrate the benefits of counter attacking quickly when play breaks down to catch the opposition out of position. Improve decision making and encourage scanning when team mates have the ball.

Set up

  • 30m x 20m area
  • 3 mini goals at one end and large goal with pen area at the other.
  • Pitch divided into 3 equal 10m x 20m zones with cones or discs
  • Yellow to score against goal keeper in large goal. Free to access whole pitch
  • Blue to score in mini goals. Free to access whole pitch
  • Pink to join in when yellow in possession ONLY. When blue in possession they must remain stationary. Locked to one player per zone.
Activity
  • Yellows must attempt to score in the large goal by combining with each other and the Pinks to create an opportunity to score in the large goal.
  • Blues must attempt to win the ball by intercepting passes or tackling yellow players. Once they have regained possession, they must counter attack and score in the mini goals.
  • Pinks must use only one touch to combine and cannot pass to each other. Pinks must also freeze when the blue team regain the ball and cannot interact with the game until the Yellow players regain possession.
  • Yellows get one point for scoring a goal. And a bonus point per pink player utilised (up to 4 points per goal)
  • Blues get one point per goal, and 4 bonus points if the goal is scored within 10 seconds.
  • Rotate roles after each rep.
Questions

  • How can we make sure we make the right decisions when passing and moving? Are we scanning?
  • Can we use our positioning to block off passes without standing next to that player? Cover Shadow
  • How can we decide whether to attack quickly or slowly when we get the ball? What are the advantages and disadvantages of both?
Variations:
  • To simplify: Increase freedom of pinks to allow more touches/movement, decrease number of zones
  • To challenge: Increase number of zones by adding a vertical line in the centre zone with additional pink to lock a player in each centre zone (four pinks total)
