Session Objectives

What? - Improve the team's ability to play through the middle third.

When? - After playing out of the back and into middle third, or after regaining possession in middle third.

Where? - Middle third.

Who? - Focus group: #6,8,10 (in conjunction with #9).

Why? - (Possible scenarios: Team has struggled to play through the middle third, center mids have given the ball away X amount of time).

Team Tactical Principles

1. Spread out.

2. Utilize space and triangulate to create passing options.

3. Pass or dribble forward when possible or keep the ball.

4. Support the attack.

5. Create a 2v1 or a 1v1.

6. Create diagonal passing lines

7. Vary the way of running and try to get behind/between the defensive line(s) of the opponent

INTENSITY: Moderate to hard

DIMENSIONS:

The course is made up of six pairs of parallel cones, approximately 5-6 yards apart.

DESCRIPTION:

- Two players start at the same time from the first pair of cones, jog along the inside of the cones and do the various exercises on the way. After the last cone, they run back along the outside. On the way back, speed can be increased progressively as players warm up.

INTENSITY: Moderate to hard

DESCRIPTION:

- Playing space split into 4 squares. Players passing and moving in groups of 3.

- Ball must be played into a different square every time.

- Players looking to move into open square to create triangles.

COACHING POINTS:

- Creating diagonal passing lanes (movement to support the ball)

- Appropriate body shape to receive the ball

DESCRIPTION:

- 5 reds +GK vs. 4 yellows. Players stay in their zones.

- Ball starts from Zone 1 trying to play into Zone 2 and then into the #9.

- If yellows win it, they can break forward and go to goal.

- Rotate defenders after every dead ball.

COACHING POINTS:

- Midfield rotation (taking defenders away to create new space for teammates)

- Playing in between the lines
