4v2 (10 mins)

15x15 grid. 4 players along the outer lines of the grid with 2 defenders in the middle trying to intercept the ball. The defenders are allowed to tackle the player in possession of the ball.

The 4 attackers should be placed on a side of the grid instead of a cone in the corner of the grid. We want the players to be able to move to create angles to either keep the ball or play a split pass. Rotate the defenders every 2-3 minutes

Regression: If players struggle play 4v1 but make sure everyone starts with 4v2 and allow the players to try

Objective:

1. Player with the ball should look at location of defenders and play away from defenders

2. Players without the ball should look to create good angles to receive ball. Get to a location where a defender is unable to block the path of the ball to you

Coaching Points:

  • Passing technique (review) - heel down, toe up, inside of foot, hips pointing in direction you want to pass
  • Receiving technique (review)- inside of foot, in the direction you want to go next
  • Movement to get open - Where can you go to be open? Is there a defender blocking the path between you and the ball.

2v2/3v3 to corners (15 mins)

Set up:

30*20 grid with a 5*5 section in each corer as shown in the diagram above. Two teams of 4/5 players each with 2v2/3v3 in the middle and 2 players from each team in a 5*5 corner section diagonally across from teammate (see diagram). Some groups have the ability to start with 3v3, this should be determined by the developmental level of each group by the coach.

Players in the corner cannot be tackled but should not be in possession of the ball any longer than 3-5 seconds. Team is allowed to play ball back to the person in the corner that originally started with the ball to help keep possession.

Team in possession tries to keep possession to play from one corner the next, team receives a point each time this is done successfully.

Progression: Play 3v3 in the middle. Some groups may be able to start with 3v3 depending on ability

Coaching Points:

  • Make field as big as possible
  • Receive ball across body to see more of the field
  • Try to receive ball across body to facilitate playing quickly
  • Players should always look to pass and move quickly but have good enough recognition of when to dribble

Guided Questions:

  •  How can you see who you are getting the ball FROM and who you are giving it TO at the SAME TIME? Receive ball across your body (with foot furthest away), with back to the sideline
  • What should you do when your teammate has the ball? Get open where there are no defenders between me and the ball
  • How do you know where to find open space? By looking around (both when you have the ball and when your teammate has the ball)
  • What could you do if you have open space when in possession of the ball? Dribble with head up so you can make the best choice next

4v4 (4 Gate Game) (20 mins)

Set up: Play 4v4 to two gates approximately four yards wide as shown in diagram. Use an area approximately 40 wide*30 long. Teams score by passing through the gate.

  • Progression 1 - team in possession can score by either playing 5 consecutive passes or passing through the gate
  • Progression 2 - team in possession can score by playing 5 passes or dribbling through the gate to score, they are no longer allowed to pass through the gate.

Coaching Points/Guided Discovery Questions:

  • How can you find a teammate? Look up while dribbling
  • What does good passing technique look like? Inside of foot, hips facing direction you want to pass, ankle locked, follow through towards intended target of pass
  • When might it be a good time to pass? When a teammate is open; when more than one defender goes to the person with the ball
  • When might be a good time to dribble? Whenever you have space
  • How do you want to try and receive whenever possible? Across your body
    • Why? so you can see both where the ball is coming from and where you want to go at the same time

6v6 (4 Gate Game) (20 mins)

Set up:

Using the Academy 7v7 field markings play a game of 6v6 from box to box utilizing the full width of the field as shown in the diagram. There should be a gate approximately 8 yards wide (from sideline to a couple yards inside the box). Teams score by dribbling through either of the two gates.

Players are now asked to play specific positions; center back (4/5), right/left(7/11 or 2/3), center mid (6/8/10), forward (9). Coaches should use the descriptive names of the positions and nut just the numbers as players will need some time to learn that.

  • Progression - As players start to have more success switching the ball from one side of the field away from defenders remove the gates and add goalkeepers to play a regular 7v7 game.
Coaching Points/Guided Questions

  • How can you find a teammate? Look up while dribbling
  • When might it be a good time to pass? When a teammate is open; when more than one defender goes to the person with the ball
  • When is it a good time to dribble? Whenever you have space, or when there is a 1v1 situation in a favorable part of the field
  • How do you get open for a teammate? Move to a spot where there is no defender between you and the ball
  • How do you want to receive the ball? Across your body if possible so that you can see more of the field
