Description

Players will improve their ability to strike the ball with power and accuracy in and around the penalty area when attacking goal from central and wide areas so they can create and finish more scoring chances during games.

Introduction15 mins

Organization: 

  • 40x20 area
  • Two teams (4 max)
  • Big goal
  • Programming: Active 2m / Rest 1m / Sets 3

Instructions: 

  • Player (1) passes to player (2), follows pass
  • Players (2) receives, opens up and passes to player (3), follows pass
  • Player (3) takes receiving touch, prep touch, and then shoots on goal
  • Player (3) joins opposite line
  • Points awarded based shot distance (see numbers on right of diagram)

Coaching Points: 

  • Plant non-kicking foot beside the ball
  • Lock ankle when striking
  • Head down at contact
  • Knee and chest over the ball
  • Follow through toward target
  • Recognize when you have space to shoot

Progressions: 

  • 1. Dominant foot
  • 2. Weak foot
  • 3. Either foot

Main Activity30 mins

Organization:

  • 40x20 area
  • Big goal
  • Programming: Active 2m / Rest 30s / Multiple Progressions

Instructions (Progression 1a):

  • Defender serves the attacker.
  • Attacker scores:
    • 2 points from blue zone
    • 1 point from green zone
  • Defender follows pass as passive pressure.

Instructions (Progression 1b):

  • Defender becomes live after the pass.
  • If defender wins possession:
    • Dribble over endline
    • Or pass back to GK

Instructions (Progression 2):

  • Defender serves attacker.
  • Attacker 1 stays wide and serves Attacker 2.
  • Attackers score:
    • 1 point for goal
    • 2 points for one-touch finish from pass
  • Switch sides and repeat.

Instructions (Progression 3):

  • Attacker drives into space.
  • Defender becomes live on positive touch.
  • Attacker attempts to score before grey zone.
  • If defender wins possession, they may shoot.

Coaching Points:

  • Lock ankle when striking
  • Angle prep touch toward goal
  • Create space before shooting
  • Shoot early when space opens
  • Make a move to create separation, not just beat the defender
  • Recognize opportunities to shoot from distance

  • FIFA Rules

Coaching Points:

  • Shoot when you have space
  • Follow every shot
  • Attack rebounds
  • Create space before shooting
  • Finish quickly around goal

Debrief:

  • When was it better to shoot instead of taking another touch?
    When the goal was open or defenders were recovering.
  • What helped you shoot with more power and accuracy?
    Locked ankle, balanced body position, and good prep touch.
  • Why is following your shot important?
    Rebounds create second chances to score.
  • How did creating space help your finishing?
    It gave more time and a better angle to shoot.
  • What types of chances are easiest to score?
    Close-range shots, one-touch finishes, and rebounds.
