Set Up:
- Square 25m x 25m (change size to accommodate different ages and player numbers)
- Corner markers
- Players divided in two attacking teams (red and blue) + a defending team (yellow)
- Total 4 Balls
- Small Goal at each end
Instructions:
- Start with 1 Ball per team.
- An outside player receives the ball from an inside player and takes his/her 1st touch behind the corner marker (representing a defender), makes a pass to an inside team mate, comes into the field to receive as in a wall pass, then must find another team mate on the outside to pass to, making sure to keep possession against yellow defenders.
- Outside players have a maximum of 3 secs to pass the ball to the inside player.
- Defenders get 3 points for each intercept.
- Attackers get a point for each successful combination sequence.
Variation/Progression:
- Swap defending team.
- Add in second ball to each attacking team (depending on number of players).
- Include shooting and allocate and end to each team ie red shoots towards one end goal and blue team shoots in the other. During play Coach calls colour of one team and the player with the ball takes a 1st touch around another player before having a shot into a goal, coach sends in another ball to restart.
Key Coaching Points:
- Can players take their 1st touch away from defenders?
- Can players take their 1st touch into space and drive?
- Can defenders work together to intercept a pass?
- Can players communicate to each other through verbal and body positioning, passing options and letting team mate know when being pressed?
- Can players scan to see where their next pass will be and move/support.
Player Coaching Points:
- Can you question yourself what's next? to help focus on next action needed
- Who can I support? Where do I now need to go? (Decision Making + Mobility)
- Where can I be the best support? (Field and Body Positioning - in front or behind a defender?)
- When can I make the next football action/run? (Moment - Can I see my teammate is ready to make a pass that I can receive arriving on touch)
- Why am I making the next football action? (Decision making - If my first action was blocked, what can I do next?)
- How can I execute the best football action? (Running at speed, Weighting a Pass, Tracking back into gap to support)
- Where in the space/grid can I create the best passing option (using width)
