DELAY
Pressure on the ball –why,when,where, how?
Giving ground –why,when,where, how?
Pressure, cover, marking.
CONCENTRATION– (Compactness)
Distances – between players, units, from goal, from ball.
Relationships – angles, cover etc.
Movement – as a defending team.
DEPTH
Protecting the space behind the back line – how?
Distance from goal, of back line.
BALANCE
Supporting.
Defensive symmetry – marking opponents, marking/occupying
significant spaces at right time.
CONTROL/RESTRAINT
Personal defensive discipline – decision-making, defensive
actions, control of thoughts and actions.

Scenario - Ball played into their winger.
Defensive Unit
-Nearest full back to engage the ball
- 5 & 6 - come accross & mark their strikers on the outside shoulders should they play a pass in behind you will win the race or inside you can look to intercept.
- Opposite full back tuck in slightly higher than the defensive line covering their opposite winger.
- GK - in relation to the ball ready to sweep up any balls in behind.
Midfield Unit
- Nearest winger recovers to put the pressure on from the front if the player is delayed.
- 4 & 8 get accross to provide support & cover
- Opposite winger tucks in like the full back on a slightly higher line to pressure any switched balls.
Attacking Unit
- Recover in position ready to pressure any balls played back into their defensive unit.

Scenario - Ball played into their winger.
Defensive Unit
-Nearest defender to engage the ball - usually 5 or 6
- Other centre back to provide cover in the central area
- Full backs to drop & tuck in to give compactness - Whichever full back is closest to their other striker man mark him inside shoulder.
- GK - in relation to the ball ready to sweep up any balls in behind.
Midfield Unit
- Nearest midfielder usull 4 or 8 - recovers to put the pressure on from the front if the player is delayed.
- Other CM recovers with any forward runners.
- Wingers to recover & screen passes out wide.
Attacking Unit
- Recover in position ready to pressure any balls played back into their defensive unit.

- When ball played into their Full back - Winger to engage , CM's Slide accross to cover & support.
Attacking Unit
- Try to win the ball back high up by pressing loose or weak passes.
- If can't press deflect & make play predictable.
- Screen pass into their midfield unit.
