Technical (10 mins)

Set Up

2 x squares, 5x5 yards

1 player on each cone

Drill

Players pass the ball around the square in a clockwise direction

Initially they do this with the ball at feet

Receiving the ball on the back foot

Ensure no passes enter the square

Second phase, the players pass the ball around the square by rolling the ball out of hands

They must receive the ball in hands, ensuring that their body is low to ground, with both hands together in the 'W' position

This can progress to a throw-in style pass

Set Up

1 goal on either side of the pitch - flats to create a DANGER ZONE. Replicating box/GK area.

2 teams, each working in one half of the set up.

Drill

The coach will serve the ball to the attacking player

They will receive the ball with their back to goal. They now have 2 options

  • Either turn and shoot, before crossing the red line
  • Or they dribble the ball across the red line, but must now try to round the keeper
The keeper should first anticipate the shot from distance, so get themselves set in the centre of the goal

If the attacker chooses to dribble the ball, the keeper must be quick off their line, closing down the space and throwing themselves at the feet of the attacker.

Can we encourage the GK to act as a last defender in this situation - quick off their line to close the space of the attacker as soon at they enter the danger area.
