Players work to build confidence in when/how to take defenders on in 1v1 situations in midfield 1/3. Place players according to field position so that they can see the application to big game. All players need to build confidence in 1v1 & ability to decide if the risk is the right timing or if they need to place safe to keep possession. Encourage a high tempo training with a lot of competitiveness. The energy of coach & players will drive this session. Encourage & give positive feedback to players on how they might beat a defender utilizing Speed, Skill, & Creativity.

The Session: 1v1 Team Domination.
Set Up:
8 yd x 8 yd square area or larger as needed.
Balls - plenty of balls ready
Bibs to designate teams
Quick transition 1 v1 game. Red team attacks playing A to B or vice versa, & blue team attacks C to D or vice versa. Teams receive a point by playing from A to B thru the middle player. Middle player is in 1v1 situation in middle & works to beat the defender to play out. Once the player plays out to his team, he follows his pass & the player who received enters field of play to take on defender & play to the opposite side. If defender wins ball they transition to attack & play out to either side & the attacker who lost ball transitions to defend & try to win ball back.
1) Play 2-3 min periods
2) Play 2v2 in middle (enlarge area)
3) keep track of individual points & team points to designate winners

The Session: 1v1 Domination in midfield 1/3. Building confidence in midfielders/forwards in beating defenders to create opportunties to move ball from midfield 1/3 to attacking 1/3. (This could also be used as a defensive session by focusing on the defending group & their 1v1 defending skills, as well as group defending)
Set up:
You need balls, bibs, cones and two goals. Set up an area 40 x 20 yards split into three with the outer zones 8 yards and the inner zone 24 yards. You can easliy rotate players in & out every minute or so. Place players according to # position to make as game like as possible.
How to do it
Split your players into two teams of five with one player becoming a #4/5, plus two goalkeepers. The#4/5 play in the outer zones defending the goal in that zone. The teams play 4v4 in the centre zone but pair them up so they go 1v1 against the same player whether defending or attacking. If players break through into final 1/3 they may have a teammate join them to make it 2v2 in final zone to goal. Players stay in their zones until player beats a dender into final zone. In the final part of the session clear the zones and play a normal 6v6 game and see if your players have built confidence in 1v1 & how to set themselves up to beat a player moving forward, sideways, or with back to goal.
Key Coaching Points:
Attackers:
1) Scan Field
2) Work rate off of ball to receive ball into space, behind a defender, or with defender on back
3) Communication (verbal, & visual physical queus)
4) Technical receiving, feinting, & dribbling
5) Change of speed & playing physical to protect ball
Defending:
1) 1v1 defending
2) Communication
3) Group defending (pressure, cover, balance)
4) Out play opponent
