Backwards diving
A paper exercise on how backwards diving can put more pressure on the Goalkeeper instead of a nice easy dive

Positioning - 2
Here, our red Goalkeeper starting position is correct for ball 2, he is in-line with the ball and central to the goal (as the red line is passing through his legs)
What about our yellow and green goalkeepers? Are they in the right position for balls 1 & 3? Are they in-line? Are they central?
Would you change anything, and if so, what?

Dive
In this example the coach (1) has taken a shot towards the far post. Is the Goalkeeper is in the correct position and should he be able to make the save and secure the ball.

Dive
The goalkeeper has dived forward with his arms outstretched. The goalkeepers hands successfully cut-off the path of the ball. His left-hand gets behind the ball and his right-hand on top of the ball to secure it.
Notice that the goalkeeper's chest is now pointing towards the position that the ball just came from (the striker)
The Goalkeeper can now stand up with the ball-in-hand and we are in an ATTACKING position

Backwards Dive
On this example, the Goalkeeper has dived backwards.
Notice that his hands have not reached the ball even though he started in exactly the same position - where is the ball going to end up???

Correct dive
The goalkeeper has now dived correctly and cut off the path of the ball.
You can see by this diagram that if he had dived backwards, not only would he ended up in his own goal, he would not have got near to the ball

Positioning - 1
Positioning
1, 2 & 3 represent the position that the shot is taken from.
You will see by the coloured lines that the starting position of the Goalkeeper has to be in front of the ball and facing towards it. The flat line is where you must stand.
All parts of your body must be facing the ball, feet, knees, hips, chest and head. Your eyes must be looking at the ball. If any part of your body is out of line this could affect our ability to make and effective save
