Description

Organisation (Practice Layout & Transition)

During this 1 hour session we looked at getting the players to become more comfortable with the ball at their feet for longer periods of time. Alot of sessions of late have been about passing and moving but I felt the players were looking to pass the ball from a standing position of receiving the ball rather than moving with the ball into space before moving the ball on to another player. So the focus was on close control of the ball and dribbling.

Stage 1 was was a warm up just to get a feel for the ball and plenty of touches with different feet and different parts of the feet. Not a huge fan of cone work as it is not match day realism to the drill but on this occasion it was good for the drill as the players knew how far they had to run with the ball, at what pace, when to slow down and also being able to judge the turn or change of direction. It also gave me a good idea of what players were more comfortable with and which ones needed an extra challenge for the drill who were too comfortable and simply going through the motions.

Stage 2 was built around being able to change direction and keep the ball close with more encouragement to run with the ball, be more alert not to collide with one and other and also had a challenge for them to compete for. Again I was able to see which players needed extra support, some needed encouragement to move that little bit quicker as some were at a fast walking pace rather than being on their toes and dribbling at a good tempo. The players enjoyed the challenge of the flat markers which set a good atmosphere for the rest of the session.

Stage 3 was all about pace and control of the ball, the turn at the top pole was key to getting the players in a good position to run with the ball at pace back towards the 2 poles and through towards goal. I changed up the challenges for this drill, change of feet, adding a defender, getting a step over in at the top pole or a Cruyff turn done. It was a good experience for the players because as I said at the beginning we work a lot on playing as a unit with plenty of passing and moving it was good for them to get more ball time.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

Light warm up exercise where the players have to get plenty of touches on the ball. Space can be as big as you like however for this particular drill I have gone with a 20x20 metre grid.

You will require 9 cones for this drill, 4 balls minimum ( depending on how many dribbles and turns you would like ). 6-8 players is a good number so it keeps the drill flowing. Too few players can make this drill a stop/start exercise.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

The aim of the drill is to keep the ball close to your body with plenty of touches on both feet with head up us much as possible and becoming comfortable moving a long the floor with ball at feet. Encourage to use different parts of the foot to control with ( inside, outside, rollover, drag etc ) just as long as the player doesn't lose control of the ball or generates too much pace on the ball which would be hard to regain control once it has gotten away from you in a drill like this.

The idea is the players ( start at A ) go and get a ball from the designated areas and dribble it down to an orange cone, they then leave the ball there and move on to the next ball repeating the same method until they get to the last ball and leave it at the flag ( B ). On the final cone with the ball the coach should be positioned here to add a new ball to the cone so that this keeps momentum going. The more little touches the better, it is not a sprint exercise. Once the first couple of turns have happened, mix it up a bit, left foot only, zig-zag, add a step over, move the shoulders more drop the shoulder then heading in a different direction. Encourage the players to be imaginative with the ball during the exercise.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

Here the drill is based more on free movement keeping the ball close and using the same methods of control as the first drill ( stage 1 ). Same size grid ( 20x20 metres ), same amount of players ( 6 ) and 5 flat marker discs to start.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

The task for the players this time is to move freely around the grid, trying new moves, touches and learning to get comfortable with the ball. This time they need to keep their heads up at all times and not collide with each other. There have been 5 markers put out on the grid that when the coach shouts " Go " the 6 players have to try and get to the marker as quick as possible and the 1 player that takes too long drops out of the game and becomes an extra obstacle moving around the grid without a ball trying to disturb the player with the ball. Keep the flat marker discs as 1 fewer than players until you have a winner and keep added the players that drop out for not finding a marker in time to the group trying to disturb the players with the ball. By doing this it brings more realism to the drill and better prepares players for a match day environment.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

2 mini goals required for this drill along with 6 poles, 6 balls and 6 players on a 30x30 metre grid.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

The idea behind this exercise is to do what has been done in the first 2 stages of the session but adapt them now to a faster paced competition where the players been split into 2 groups ( 3v3 ) and have to dribble the ball up to the poles where they then need to get a good turn around the pole in before heading back down through the 2 poles and scoring in the mini goal. They are not allowed to put the ball in the net before going past the 2 poles. This competition will give the players a bigger challenge as they will not won't to come out of the drill on the losing team. Once a couple of turns have been taken and you feel the drill is running its course add 2 more defenders to the drill or take a player out of each team to act as a defender if you have not got enough defenders for the exercise. The defenders will have to try and hold the player off from getting through the 2 poles, once they have gone through the poles the defender is not allowed beyond that point.
