Switch the play to finish (15 mins)

Practice Objective:

  • Encourage players to switch the play and then to support the attack and make use of the numerical advantage and space in order to finish.

Set Up

  • 1 goal
  • area of 20m x 20m
  • 8 cones to make 2 5x5m boxes, 10m apart
  • bag of balls
  • 2 sets of bibs

Practice Explanation:

  • Set up players in a 3v2 as shown.
  • The play starts in Zone 1, with a 2v1 scenario. Other attacking player remains in Zone 2, with 1 defender covering the central area.
  • Zone 1 attackers to complete 3 passes before transferring to Zone 2. They then breakout of the box to support the attack.
  • Goal = 1 point
  • Defending team - if they win the ball, can they get the ball back into either Zone 1or 2 for a point.
  • Each time the ball goes out, reset and start again by getting a ball from the pile.

Progression 1 - no pass limit, but must transfer on coaches whistle

Progression 2 - players do not have to transfer - they can break out of Zone 1 with a 1v1 skill and then the attack can start, with all players competing in a 3v2.

  • 5x2m/2R

Coaching Points

  • Striking the ball and ball speed in transfer
  • supporting the play - making the runs into space, behind the defender
  • Strike early or delay and cross - encourage variety and decision making
  • Defenders -delay and show players into wider areas
  • Transition  - quick and agile
