A session looking at different ways of connecting & combining with the 9 to get behind defence & create goalscoring opportunities.

Function 6 vs 5 + 1 GK- Reds playing with a 3-3 try and break down a 3-2. Reds must try and combine with the 9 before scoring. Challenge the opposition to press and get up the pitch and not get beat on outside.
Create Space- Stretch the play
The highest player on the pitch which will be the 9 should always look to play as high as possible (hide & seek with CB) to stretch play, This will create more space for players in deeper areas to combine and create.
Movement
Players are encouraged to constantly move and rotate to disrupt defenders and open up passing lanes to the 9.
Movement for 9
The constant movement away and to the ball to create space (hide & seek to keep the defender guessing), if pressure is good on our player with the ball generally wants to see 9 moving towards, if our player has time penetrative run away from the ball. Stress timing of movement to create more space, once the player gets touch of feet or if other play is about to receive.
Quality of pass and pass selection
Ensure passes are made with the appropriate weight to allow the receiving player to play in 1. Look to skip a unit with passing to break other teams' pressing structure.
Receiving
Challenge the 9 to recognise when to set the ball, if pressure is tight from behind, and when to turn, if space allows them to do so, and drive at the opposition. Could also look to spin, if the pressure is too tight.
Support Play
As the play progresses, players must ensure they give good support angles to the player in possession of the ball – mostly from beneath the ball.
Players should be encouraged to recognise chances to make a third-man run beyond the highest player to create through-ball/forward-passing opportunities.
Counter-Press
If we lose the ball win it back quickly and look to play off 9
Movement from 9
Detach yourself from the defender when a player front facing in space, run off the shoulder/blindside run.

SSG- 6 vs 6 with Reds playing 2-3 and Whites playing 3-2. Challenge opposition to press and get up pitch & not get beat on outside.
Create Space- Stretch the play
The highest player on the pitch which will be the 9 should always look to play as high as possible to stretch play, This will create more space for players in deeper areas to combine and create. Would also like 7 & 11 high & wide ready to play off-shoulder. 10 & 8 occupying the half-space to create a central passing lane to 9. The key principle always wants 1 player offering to run beyond to create more space.
Movement
The constant movement away and to the ball to create space (hide & seek to keep the defender guessing), if pressure is good on our player with the ball generally wants to see 9 moving towards, if our player has time penetrative run away from the ball. Challenge the winger to act off 9s movement and do the opposite of what they do.
Support Play
As the play progresses, players must ensure they give good support angles to the player in possession of the ball – mostly from beneath the ball. When played centrally into 9 I'm looking for 10 & 8 to offer third-man support then 7 and 11 to make runs beyond.
When the ball is played wider, can 9 offer support for 7 and 11, or can 10 & 8 offer run beyond? Far side CM to act as security & cover
Movement to penetrate
If the 8 or 10 is front-facing with space can 9 make a run off the shoulder? If facing the player 9 has to get hips forwards facing as quickly as possible and create an angle for the pass...bend the run.
When we're building up possession I will look at 9 coming deep to receive which will be a trigger for one of the CM's or wingers run beyond, 1 come to play 1 go away
Counter Pressing If we lose the ball progress ball quickly. Smother or recover?

Lead-in
6 vs 6 in 40 x 40 with 10 x 40 end zone. The objective is to score in mini-goals, but teams have to go into 9 who are in the end zone before scoring. This will get teams playing forward and supporting the 9.
Create space
Create width & depth to create more passing lanes into 9
Receiving
Receive on half turn/quarter turn to play forward quickly
Movement
The movement to create a passing lane for 9
Weight & Quality of Pass
Ensure passes are made with the appropriate weight to allow the receiving player to play in 1. Also talk about deception.
Support Play
As the play progresses, players must ensure they give good support angles to the player in possession of the ball – mostly from beneath the ball.
Progress by taking out the end zone and moving goals back.
Movement for 9
The constant movement away and to the ball to create space (hide & seek to keep the defender guessing), if pressure is good on our player with the ball generally wants to see 9 moving towards, if our player has time penetrative run away from the ball
Receiving for 9
Challenge the #9 to recognise when to set the ball, if pressure is tight from behind, and when to turn, if space allows them to do so, and drive at the opposition.
