Skill Introduction (15 mins)

Set Up:

  • Players: 10-14 Split into two teams
  • Grid Size 22m x 28m 
Explanation: 
  • Teams are to start at opposite ends and circulate the ball from one side to the other avoiding the opposite team. Teams need to be organised and well positioned in order to provide maximum options for the player on the ball. 
  • The ball does not need to be played in a specific pattern. Players must follow their pass or push another player into the next position/area. 
  • Passes can only be played forwards.

Concluding Competition

  • Teams will compete to see how many times they can get from end to end in 90 seconds

Skill Training (20 mins)

Set Up:

  • Players: 10-14
  • Grid Size: 2 grids 10m x 10m

Explanation: 

  • In the area shown in the diagram, 3 attackers play against 1 defenders. 
  • The attackers cannot go into the grid, the defender may not go out of the grid to win the ball but can only intercept the pass 
  • The attacking team scores by playing 5 passes. 
  • Rotate player in the middle after 45 to 60 seconds

Team task: To maintain possession for as long as possible

Coaching Points:

  • Can you position your body in a way that you can play forward (open body shape)
  • Can you play your pass with good weight and along the ground
  • Can you provide and option for your teammate that is one of left, right, middle or far

Player Actions: 

  • Can you take your first touch away from the opponent
  • Can you position yourself where you can see the whole field
  • Circulate the ball as quickly as possible (ball speed)
  • Can you see your opponent, see the ball and your next pass
  • Players off the ball constantly get into positions to support player on the ball 
  • As the ball moves around, can you reposition yourself at all times to see the line of the ball.

Step up:  

  • Reduce grid size
  • Add two touch limit 
  • Create a 4v2 situation
  • Create a 5v3 situation
Step down: 
  • Increase grid size 
  • Create a 4v1 situation

Skill Game (20 mins)

Set Up:

  • Players: 10-14
  • Grid Size: 22m x 35m split into two halves

Explanation: 

  • 6v6 game
  • 3/4 players from each team will be on either half of the field.  
  • The attacking team will need to play a forward pass into their teammate in the other half before moving forward. An attacking player in the back half can also make a forward run into the opponent's half in order to receive the ball. Once they are successful in getting the ball into the front half, players can move into this half to provide support.
  • If the goal comes after a successful forward pass into the front half it counts for 3.
  • Play restarts from coach

Progression:

  • Teams have 7 passes to get a shot at goal otherwise possession is turned over

Key Session Observations:

  • Training game is there to give the opportunity to players to PLAY FOOTBALL whilst applying the learning from the first components of the session.
  • Assess how much 'teaching and learning has taken place
