Organisation (Practice Layout & Transition)
Set out an area of 25m x 15m with a 2m box in each corner. Position two 1m gates (using cones) along the vertical centre line, 8m from each end line leaving a 7m gap between the gates.
Technical - Diagonal Passing
Using the two centre gates from the session layout, have the players work in groups of 3
Player 1 dribbles forward to halfway and passes to Player 2 in front of him, who returns the pass before moving to other side of gate to receive a diagonal return pass (1-2)
Player 2 then repeats the process to Player 3
Play continues in an anti-clockwise direction before reversing to work on weaker foot
Coaching Position -
Coach should position himself to one side of the playing area in a central position to allow easy observation of the group while allowing him to move between other groups repeating the same exercise
Interventions -
Stop play to demonstrate the importance of keeping the head up to spot the correct passing angle for diagonal pass
Individual interventions to demonstrate body position and correct foot to receive ball
Mechanics -
Demonstrate the mechanics of the movement from one side of the gate to the other to receive return pass.
Utilise a backwards arc movement to keep eye contact with player and ball.
Skill - Spotting the Passing Window
Players are split into two groups and positioned at each ends in the respective right hand boxes.
One player starts with the ball and makes a forward dribble, keeping head up, until they spot the window for passing the ball through the furthest gate to the player waiting at the front of the opposite box.
Execute the pass and continue the run through the empty box at the far end before joining the opposite queue.
Next player repeats on opposite side.
Coaching Position -
Positioned between the two gates in the centre of the area is the best position to observe both sides and allow easy communication with both groups as well as the players on the ball
Interventions -
Stop play to demonstrate the length of the passing window and emphasize the need to keep their heads up
If players are missing the window, pull them to one side to explain that the faster they are moving, the less time they have to execute the pass.
Slow down first, to correct the pass timing before increasing speed
Mechanics -
Ensure players understand the need to have the correct foot position when passing the ball
Keep emphasizing the importance of keeping head up to see the window

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
Progression 1 - Switch sides to reverse play and concentrate on passing with weaker foot
Progression 2 - Close the cones up, reducing the passing window
Progression 3 - Introduce 2nd ball, running both sides simultaneously
Regression 1 - Open up cones to increase passing window
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
Place a time restriction on the completion of pass (5 seconds)
Introduce a fun penalty (3 push ups, star jumps, etc) for stray passes or hitting cones
Challenge players to make 3 consecutive successful passes

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
Progression 1 - Reduce gate size to challenge passing accuracy and timing
Progression 2 - Reverse play to work on weaker foot
Regression 1 - Increase gate size to allow bigger passing window
Challenges, Conditions or Targets: Challenge players to complete 10 successful passes.
