Positinal zone game (20 mins)

Set-up

The in possession team (Blacks) – is made up of 2CBs, 3CMs. The defending team (Y) is made up of 1 DEF 2 MID and an attacker. B can move freely but Y are limited to their 3rds. The ball starts with B, who try to advance through the thirds to score. If the out-of-possession team manages to win possession, they attempt to score quickly in one of the mini-goals. Progression - Defending team can move freely.

Technical coaching points

Bounce passes (1 touch)
• Players can start to identify when to use bounce passes to other players in the end zone in order to encourage the opposition into pressing.
• Once the pass comes back to the player who originally played the pass, they should be looking to split through the two defenders, who should be out of position.
Change the pace
• The players should be encouraged to change the tempo of the practice.
• Slow the game down to encourage the oppo to press, when they do, speed up with quick passes in the space they have created by pressing.
Pass variations
• Disguised passes, show the oppo one direction and pass the other. Bounce passes - pass into feet and have the ball 'bounced' into feet.
Position between players.
• In-possession play on the shoulders of the defenders. Receive on the back foot and then play forward, or create space between the defenders for another player to perform a split pass.

Tactical coaching points

Create overloads

Identify areas where a overload can be created by moving into that space. EG - B10 drops into middle to make 3v2

• Move to space to allow a teammate to move into, to create an overload. EG - both CMs move to one side and B5 moves up to receive a pass and play forward.

Set Up Focus players - On the ball players B4/6/8, Off the ball B10/9, Away from the ball B7/11/. ATT v DEF Blacks set up in 4-2-3-1 (lose FBs if fewer numbers, 2-2-3-1) Yellows in 4-2-3-1. When Y win the ball they are trying to score, must cross line before shot.

Technical CP's

Play on oppo players shoulders
•The higher midfielders (A8 and A10) should attempt to play between the opposition midfielders,
• Clever positioning on the shoulder should allow passes to be played to their back foot, which will allow them to play forward and combine with the striker.
Striker, move between the lines
•With B6/8 playing on the shoulders of Y6/7 or 8/11, the Y midfielders, may be forced to defend slightly wider.
•This should create opportunities for the B10 to move between the lines, receive forward passes and combine with either of the higher midfielders.
Runs behind the back line
• B attackers should be encouraged to run in behind the back line, which will increase the spaces between the lines for combinations.
• It also allows opportunities for the in-possession team to play passes behind the back line once they have broken the opponents’ midfield line.
Play through or around the defence
• The emphasis is on central combination play, but the way the opposition defends will have an influence on whether there is space in central or wide areas.
• The attacking team should be encouraged to find opportunities to play around if the defending team remains narrow. Playing around may result in the defending team become more stretched horizontally across the pitch, thus creating opportunities to complete central combinations.
