Description

This session focuses on enhancing players' ability to create space, maintain possession, and apply attacking principles such as width, depth, and support play. The activities are designed to progressively challenge players through dynamic passing drills, possession-based games, and a final match to consolidate learning.

Session Structure:

  • Warm-Up: Creating Space to Receive (Technical Practice)

    • Players work in two small groups, each with four players (three on the outside and one in the middle).
    • The middle player receives passes from teammates on the outside, then quickly returns the ball to another teammate.
    • Emphasis is on footwork, body shape, awareness, and quality of passing.
    • Focus: Develop technical skills in receiving under pressure and making quick, accurate passes.
  • Progression: 3v1 Rondo

    • Transition to a 3v1 rondo within the same setup. The three attackers maintain possession against one defender, aiming to pass and move quickly.
    • The goal is to create space through movement, quick passing, and maintaining an advantage over the defender.
    • Focus: Encourage players to limit touches, make quick decisions, and constantly move to create space.
  • Progression: 6v2 Rondo

    • Both groups combine to form a larger rondo with six attackers and two defenders.
    • Attackers work on maintaining possession in a 6v2 setup, focusing on creating space and making quick, accurate passes.
    • Players are allowed to step inside the grid, creating temporary overloads and adding complexity to the game.
    • Focus: Develop spatial awareness, dynamic movement, and teamwork under pressure.
  • Modified Game: 3v3 + 1 with Goalkeepers

    • The setup transitions into a 3v3 game with goalkeepers and one neutral player to create a 4v3 advantage for the team in possession.
    • Teams can score freely, but completing three consecutive passes before scoring earns an extra point, encouraging possession-based play.
    • Focus: Enhance attacking principles, quick transitions, and decision-making while maintaining safe play around the goalkeeper zone.
  • Final Game: 4v4 + 1 (Including Goalkeepers)

    • The session concludes with a 4v4 game, including goalkeepers and a neutral player, focusing on attacking principles like width, depth, creating space, and support play.
    • Players are encouraged to use the full width of the field, create attacking opportunities through dynamic movement, and work together to break down the defense.
    • Focus: Consolidate learning from the session by applying attacking principles in a realistic game setting.

Overall Focus of the Session:

The session aims to improve players' ability to create space, maintain possession, and apply key attacking principles in various scenarios. It progresses from technical receiving and passing drills to small-sided possession games, culminating in a match that emphasizes dynamic, team-based attacking play. The focus throughout is on enhancing players' decision-making, movement, communication, and tactical awareness, preparing them to effectively create and exploit space in competitive matches.

Creating Space to Receive Technical Practice (5 mins)

Setup:

  • Create two areas, each with mannequins positioned centrally to act as defenders.
  • Each area should have four players: one player in the middle and three players on the outside.
  • Two of the outside players start with footballs.

Activity:

  • The middle player receives a pass from an outside player with a ball and quickly passes it to the outside player without a ball.
  • After the first pass, the middle player turns to receive the second ball from the other outside player, repeating the pass to the teammate without the ball.
  • The sequence continues, emphasizing quick, accurate movements and passes.
  • Rotate players in the middle every 90 seconds to ensure all players have an opportunity to work on the receiving and passing roles.

Key Coaching Points (KCP):

  • Footwork:

    • Encourage players to focus on their footwork, ensuring they position themselves to see both the ball and the intended target.
    • Quick adjustment steps before receiving the ball can help maintain balance and readiness.
  • Body Shape:

    • Players should open their body shape to face the ball and their target player, allowing them to receive and pass efficiently with one touch when possible.
    • Emphasize receiving on the back foot to create space and play forward quickly.
  • Awareness:

    • Players need to keep their heads up, being aware of the ball, the mannequins (representing opposition), and their teammates.
    • Constant scanning before, during, and after receiving the ball will enhance decision-making and execution.
  • Quality and Weight of Pass:

    • Passes should be played with the right weight, accuracy, and sometimes disguise to keep the ball moving efficiently.
    • Emphasize the importance of passing with intent—whether it’s a quick bounce pass, a firm driven ball, or a pass with a slight curve to navigate around a mannequin.

Progression 3v1 Rondo (15 mins)

Setup:

  • Two areas, each with four players: three attackers and one defender.
  • No mannequins; the focus is entirely on player movement and interaction.

Activity:

  • Set up a 3v1 rondo where the three attackers try to keep possession against one defender.
  • The attackers aim to pass, move, and create space while the defender works to win the ball.
  • Players should be encouraged to play with a maximum of two touches, promoting quick ball movement and fast decision-making.
  • Rotate the defender every 60–90 seconds so that each player experiences the role of the defender and the attackers.

Key Coaching Points (KCP):

  • Limit the Amount of Touches:

    • Players should be encouraged to play with one or two touches, aiming to keep the ball moving quickly to make it harder for the defender to intercept.
    • Limiting touches helps players focus on positioning and pre-empting their next move, enhancing decision-making speed.
  • Quick Passing:

    • Emphasize sharp, accurate passes with proper weight to maintain control and tempo.
    • Encourage attackers to look up and find teammates quickly, ensuring the defender is constantly chasing and adjusting.
  • Movement Off the Ball:

    • Players must continuously move after passing to create new passing options and keep the defender guessing.
    • Emphasize movements that create angles of support, such as checking away and back, or moving into open spaces.
  • Awareness and Scanning:

    • Encourage players to scan the area before receiving the ball to know where the defender is and where their teammates are positioned.
    • Awareness of space and teammate positioning will help attackers make quicker, smarter decisions.
  • Support and Angles:

    • The supporting players need to adjust their positioning to offer good angles for the ball carrier.
    • Stress the importance of staying connected and keeping the rondo compact to maintain control while keeping the defender under pressure.

6v2 (15 mins)

Setup Progression:

  • Use the same 6v2 setup with six attacking players on the outside and two defenders in the middle of a larger rectangular grid.
  • The key progression is now allowing the attacking players on the outside to step inside the grid when needed, creating dynamic movement and additional passing options.
PROGRESSION: Can add a midfielder that can move freely between both grids to make it 7v2

Activity:

  • The 6v2 rondo continues with the attackers trying to keep possession against two defenders.
  • Now, any of the outside players can step into the grid at any time, effectively creating a temporary overload (7v2) and changing the dynamics of the rondo.
  • When an outside player steps in, another player must immediately rotate out to maintain balance around the grid. This keeps the game fluid and encourages quick transitions.
  • Limit attackers to one or two touches to maintain speed and intensity.
  • Rotate the defenders every 60–90 seconds.

Key Coaching Points (KCP):

  • Dynamic Movement and Rotations:

    • Encourage players to constantly rotate positions, stepping into the grid to create overloads and then moving back out to keep the shape balanced.
    • Focus on the timing of movements—players should step in when it’s advantageous, like when they can offer a direct passing option or draw a defender away.
  • Awareness of Space:

    • Players must be aware of open spaces and opportunities to step in and exploit the grid.
    • Emphasize scanning the field continuously to make decisions about when to step in or rotate out.
  • Quick Decision-Making:

    • Players stepping in must decide quickly whether to pass, dribble, or reposition to maintain possession.
    • Limit touches to keep the play fast and defenders under constant pressure.
  • Support and Balance:

    • Maintain support angles and ensure that when a player steps into the grid, others adjust to keep good passing options open on the outside.
    • Players should communicate clearly when stepping in or rotating out to avoid congestion.
  • Exploiting the Overload:

    • Use the numerical advantage when an outside player steps into the grid, drawing defenders out of position to create space and opportunities for quick combinations.
    • Focus on quick, sharp passes that make it difficult for the defenders to keep up.
  • Communication and Coordination:

    • Encourage verbal and non-verbal communication to coordinate movements, ensuring smooth transitions between players stepping in and out of the grid.
    • Clear calls for passes, movement directions, or alerts to step in/out will enhance the flow and effectiveness of the rondo

Creating Space Modifed Game (25 mins)

Creating Space Modified Game (3v3 + 1 with Goalkeepers):

Setup:

  • Two goals positioned back-to-back in the center of the field, each defended by a goalkeeper.
  • The field features a central coned-off semi-circle zone around the goalkeepers to ensure safety. No players are allowed inside this middle area.
  • The game is set up as 3v3 with an additional neutral player who plays with the team in possession.

Activity:

  • The game is played as a 3v3 plus 1 neutral, creating a 4v3 advantage for the team in possession..
  • If a team in possession completes 3 consecutive passes before scoring, they earn an extra point, encouraging controlled possession and teamwork. They can score in either Goal.
  • If the goalkeeper catches the ball, the coach will immediately play a new ball to the other team, emphasizing quick transitions and continuous play.
  • First team to 5 points wins. Rotate roles regularly, allowing all players to experience being attackers, defenders, and the neutral player.

Key Coaching Points (KCP):

  • Creating Space and Movement:

    • Encourage players to constantly move to create space and support the ball carrier, opening up passing lanes and opportunities to exploit the extra player.
  • Encouraging Possession Play:

    • Rewarding 3 consecutive passes with an extra point motivates players to value possession, encouraging thoughtful, patient play instead of rushing to score.
    • Emphasize maintaining composure under pressure, using passes to control the tempo.
  • Quick Transitions:

    • When the coach plays a new ball to the other team, players must react quickly, transitioning from attack to defense or vice versa.
    • Quick responses and awareness are crucial, especially when the ball changes hands unexpectedly.
  • Utilizing the Neutral Player:

    • The neutral player should focus on being available as an outlet and helping to facilitate passing combinations, making it easier for the attacking team to achieve the three passes for an extra point.
  • Awareness and Communication:

    • Players should be scanning constantly, aware of where the space is and how to best position themselves for support.
    • Clear communication between players will help in organizing movements and ensuring effective use of space.
  • Goalkeeper’s Role:

    • Remind players to respect the goalkeeper’s safety zone.
    • Goalkeepers should be vocal, guiding the defenders and remaining engaged in play, ready to react when possession shifts.

4v4 plus 1 Game (30 mins)

Game: 4v4 + 1 (Including Goalkeepers)

Setup:

  • Set up a standard field with two goals, each defended by a goalkeeper.
  • Play 4v4, with one additional neutral player who plays with the team in possession, creating a 5v4 advantage when attacking.

Activity:

  • The game is played as 4v4 plus 1 neutral player, focusing on maintaining an advantage in possession to emphasize attacking principles.
  • The neutral player assists the team in possession, helping to facilitate play and support attacking movements.
  • Standard rules apply, but the focus is on incorporating key attacking principles such as width, depth, creating space, and support play.
  • Encourage teams to utilize the entire field, exploiting width and depth to stretch the defense and create opportunities to attack.
  • Rotate the neutral player and goalkeepers to ensure all players get a chance to work on different roles.

Key Coaching Points (KCP):

  • Width and Depth:

    • Emphasize the importance of using the full width of the field to stretch the opposition and create passing lanes.
    • Players should position themselves to provide depth, offering long and short options to keep defenders engaged and off balance.
  • Creating Space:

    • Encourage players to make runs off the ball, drawing defenders out of position and creating space for teammates.
    • Players should look to exploit gaps, using quick movements to disorganize the defense and open up opportunities to play forward.
  • Support Play:

    • Focus on providing consistent support for the ball carrier, ensuring there are always passing options available.
    • Support should be at good angles, with players constantly adjusting their positioning based on the movement of the ball and their teammates.
  • Quick Decision-Making and Combinations:

    • Encourage quick, sharp passing and combination play (e.g., one-twos) to break defensive lines.
    • Players should focus on recognizing when to pass, dribble, or shoot, making decisions based on the defenders’ positioning.
  • Utilizing the Neutral Player:

    • The neutral player is key to maintaining possession and facilitating attacking play. They should actively look for opportunities to switch play, create overloads, and support attacks.
    • Encourage the neutral to play quickly and decisively to keep the tempo high.
  • Communication:

    • Players should communicate effectively, calling for the ball, directing play, and helping organize defensive and attacking movements.
    • Good communication helps coordinate team efforts, particularly in maintaining width and depth.
