Shield Steal (15 mins)

Set Up: 

  • Divide the 8 players into two even groups.
  • One group shielding the ball (red) and one group (yellow) defending.
  • 4 small squares of 5 (L) x 5 (W).

Action: 

  • While dribbling around the area, the reds shield the ball from the yellows.
  • The yellows try to win possession of the ball.
  • Yellows count how many times they win possession..
  • Players to switch roles after a certain time.
Variation/Progressions
  • The time of sets or size of the area can be adjusted to suit the needs and abilities of the players.
  • With each turn try and beat your previous score.

Player Tips: 

  • As Above.

Coaching Points:

  • Correct running/dribbling with the ball and passing technique.
  • Ensure you show players how to protect the ball.
  • Keep the ball on the outside foot.
  • Shield up (bend elbow and lean into defender).
  • Go for the steal (win the ball).

Session Timing:

  • Complete 4 x 2 sets of 1 minutes with a 1 minute rest in between sets. Change opponent each time.
