Overview:
The New York Red Bulls Training Programs follow a researched and proven approach to player development. The following information introduces our philosophy, player development rationale, and the methods that are used to deliver our curriculum.

Player Development Rationale:
The New York Red Bulls Academy operates a building block approach to player development. Players follow an initial path heavily focused on technique and skill development, and as competency increases tactical elements are introduced. Within each building block an extensive curriculum is designed to focus on the necessary skill set. Proficiency within each block is important to ensure that the player has acquired the required skills to support their development at the next stage of the curriculum. Each building block is tied closely together. As a player progresses through the system they will continue to work on elements of preceding stages to ensure they are consistently and simultaneously challenged on both fundamental and advanced levels.

Organization:
40 x 20. Players in pairs standing opposite cones. Cones in middle of area with soccer ball on top of cone.
Instructions:
Players kick ball at the ball on the cone in front of them trying to knock it off. They get one point for each ball they know over.
Coaching Points:
Head down at the point of contact
Non-kicking foot placed to side, slightly behind the ball
Ankle locked, toe down
Contact foot – laces
Body weight forward, chest and knee over the ball at contact
Follow through landing on striking foot
Progressions:
P: First pair to ten points wins

Organization:
Half field, two goals, players split into groups of four on corner of field, each player with one soccer ball.
Instructions:
Each player takes it in turns to run towards goal and shoot. Joins opposite corner, tags next play who repeats activity.
Coaching Points:
Observation of the Goalkeeper
Choice of technique based upon distance, position of the GK
Angle of approach – off center/direct
Head down at the point of contact
Non-kicking foot placed to side, slightly behind the ball
Ankle locked, toe down
Contact foot – laces
Body weight forward, chest and knee over the ball at contact
Follow through landing on striking foot
Positive attitude towards shooting
Progressions:
P - 2 v 2, 3 v 3, 4 v 4
P - Shoot before cone
P - Add extra defender.
P - Split into teams, first team to 10 goals wins
P - Reduce number of touches
P - Add penalty when possesion lost (3 star-jumps, 3 press-ups)

Juggling soccer ball. Right foot, left foot, right knee, left knee, head. Maximizes touches at beginning of practice session in a fun and competitive activity. All body parts used. Play outside of practice session promoted.
