Stages of play possession practice
3 Stages of play: In Possession - Out of Possession - Transition
3 parts of the field: Defensive Third - Midfield Third - Attacking Third
We start in the defensive third, simple possession, the defending team start with the ball and keep possession using the whole space, when the other team win the ball they try and score in the mini goals. Defensive team have to be more conservative with how they press, in order to not give the key space away for the attacking to score if the attacking team score they get a point. If the defending team win the ball back they must try to break out of the box into the mid field third.
Emphasis on what the defending team do in the transition
They must remain compact, not pressing too aggressively.
Back into shape, allowing the two midfield to do the majority of the pressing.

Middle Third
Same concept as the Defending third, the defending team will start with possession, aiming to keep possession again making space etc. Now when the attacking team win the ball they will aim to get the ball into the defensive third with the goal of scoring. If the defending team win the ball back again their goal is the same, to advance into the final third.
Emphasis on what the defending team do in the transition.
The defending team will act slightly differently in transition, midfielders will be aggressive on the press trying to win the ball back. Defenders will drop back into shape remain compact. midfielders have to communicate for this to work.

Final Third
Same concept as the middle third, the defending team will start with possession, aiming to keep possession again making space etc. Now when the attacking team win the ball they will aim to get the ball through all three thirds with the goal of scoring. If the defending team win the ball back again their goal is score in the mini goals.

This transition will be similar to a counter attack transition, where defenders will sprint back towards their goal, midfielders will also be sprinting back but also keeping an eye on play, the attackers will press very aggressively to win the ball back in the final third
