Description

Goals of the session:

1. To improve our ability to play out of from the back against high pressing teams.

2. To improve our ability to build up play from the back as safely as possible so that we can get ourselves into the attacking half.

3. To improve our ability to play out from the back using controlled possession against a high pressing opposition.

4. To master our patterns of play when looking to play out from the back i.e. Switch and X patterns.

5. To master different ways of playing out from the back i.e. around, through and over pressure.

Technical Development "Switch" Pattern Play.

Organization:

Set up as shown.

Instructions:

"Switch" Pattern Play.

- The exercise starts with the GK calling out "Switch" to alert everyone. 

- GK then plays into one of the CBs i.e. (RCB as shown). 

- The RCB takes his first touch forward and plays a back pass to the GK.

- GK looks to quickly plays into the LCB.

- LCB looks to receive and drives forward before playing into the LWF.

- LWF starts on the halfway line and drops deep to receive and drives through the gate.

- All the players make supporting / forward movements while the ball is in play.

- Once the ball gets past the halfway line, the play is repeated on the opposite side.

- Players rotate positions on coach's call.

Coaching Points (When playing out):

- Starting positions.

- Provide support for the player on the ball.

- Weight and accuracy of passes.

- Scanning and receiving on half turn.

- Speed of play.

- Switching positions.

Technical Development - "X" Pattern Play.

Organization:

Set up as shown.

Instructions:

"X" Pattern play.

- The exercise starts with the GK making an "X" sign and calling out "X" to alert everyone. 

- GK then plays into one of the CBs i.e. (RCB as shown). 

- The RCB takes his first touch forward and look to play the nearest center mid (LCM).

- LCM scans before quickly receiving the ball on a half-turn and plays to the RWF.

- RWF starts on the halfway line and drops deep to receive and drives through the gate.

- All the players make supporting / forward movements while the ball is in play.

- Once the ball gets past the halfway line, the play is repeated on the opposite side.

- Players rotate positions on coach's call.

- Starting positions.

Organization:

Set up as shown.

Instructions:

- 6v5+2. (6 reds including GK v 5 blues + 2 yellows). 

- Reds will look to play out from the back against blues with the aim of scoring in the flag goals.

- Reds can score by either dribbling through the flag goals or receiving a pass behind the flag goals.

- Blues would look to work on pressing in the attacking third of the field and must score on the large goal within 10 seconds of regaining possession.

- Reds would be given some freedom to play long balls over the press in identified situations.

- Yellows plays as neutrals. 

Coaching Points (When playing out):

- Spread out.
- Utilize space and triangulate to create passing options.
- Speed of play i.e. move the ball quickly to unbalance the pressing team and break lines.
- What do we do if we can't playthrough or around?
- What if opposition are leaving too much space behind?

- Recycle when we can't play forward.

 Defending Coaching Points:
- Be organized by starting in the right positions i.e. pressure and double press the player with the ball.
- Keep opposition in quarter of the pitch and make opposition play predictable.
- Striker should always look to initiate the press and cut off back passes to GK or CBs.
- Always press in the identified situations and make it compact both vertically and horizontally.
- After regaining possession, counter attack quickly to score.
