Set up

Specific Drill = The ball will always start from the same side, play is reset to start again when ball is dead, or collected by the keeper.

Small sided game (SSG) = has a gaol each side and looks like a game, ball restarts from the goal / side of play when out of play.

Pitch is to be 2/3 of a 7v7, so to keep full width but only central and defensive 3rd utilised.

Specific Drill

Specific Practice / Defend the box > Attacking Transition

Welsh Way Principles - Create and Exploit overload

When & How to create the overload, Player movement to create the overload, ball speed, commit the opponent

Organisation / Area Size

Set up 2/3 7v7 pitch (40 x 44yd) with 2 target area boxes in the central 3rd.

Cone (flats preferable) the edge of the final 3rd

One full size 7v7 goal

Set the defensive team (red) into GK, LB, CDM, RB

Set an attacking team (White) into RW, STR, LW

Set Neutral team, 1 player in each box and a central player (if 9 remove central)

Objective/How:

The ball will start from the coach playing into one of the neutral players in a box, who are to play into the striker (ask the strike to drop in and receive) The defensive team (red) will set into the defensive shape of a bank of 3. The red team are to defend the goal and look to win the ball back. if they win the ball back they play into the neutral players in the box. they will then move into the attacking shape, ensure the CM steps in to midfield. The neitral player is to play back to the CM, whos objective is to play into another neutral player.

Teams can 'score' by:

Attacking team (white) score in goal = 1 point. Defending team win the ball and play out too the neutral player in box = 1 point. CM receives ball from neutal and plays into another neutral player = 3 points.

Progressions

  • Allow whites to utilise the neutral players when attacking to create overload.
  • Allow neutral player in box to exit the box during attacking phase
  • Allow central neutral player to join in the defensive phase

Coaching/Block timing

The coach is to work with the Defending team, in this

case the reds & manage the opposition in this case the Whites

encourage quick play and ensure realism for both teams for the duration of the session

Ensure movement is correct - Who, When, Where & how should they defend & trasnisiton

Challenges, Conditions & Targets

Challenge the players to play 2/3 touch and play the ball quickly, Challenge the wingers to take the player on when in a 1v1 situation, and play when 2v1. The neutral players are conditioned to 2 touch (3 if regression needed) the target is to show understanding of responsibilities, who should press, when, where & how. What should the players around the ball do to support & are we moving into an attacking shape in transition?

Key Points

Be set in defensive block

win the ball and play out quickly

movement off the ball to create overloads and support the attack

movement of LB & RB, compact together when the CM steps forward, and cover the space in a block of 3 when defending

communication

body shape & mechanics of receiving the ball (good first touch)
