1. Keep the ball in the air (two-touch).

5v5+2 Directional Rondo (15 mins)

Objective
  • Technical warmup to prepare players with regard to football actions.

Method

  • 5 greens vs. 5 reds with two neutral players (white).
  • Teams looking to score into the goal they are shooting in.
  • If ball goes out of play, game restarts with kick-in.

Orientation of Opposition

  • Narrow and compact without the ball.
  • Closing spaces and organised pressing.
  • Transition quickly to score goals.

Orientation of Team

  • Width and depth with good positioning to be able to receive.
  • Punching passes with good weight and accuracy.
  • Good utilisation of neutral players.
  • Use dribbling skills in 1v1 situations in front of goal.

Screen 3 (20 mins)

Objective

  • Unopposed pattern focused on Transition to Attack in Opposition Half.

Method

  • Player 1 passes to Player 2.
  • Player 2 sets ball to Player 3.
  • Player 3 passes into space for Player 4 to run onto ball, dribble towards end line and cut ball back.


Coaching Points

  • Position - Position to receive the ball, position to get into in box, including body shape.
  • Moment - Timing of pass, Timing of runs around and away from the ball.
  • Direction - Direction of pass and direction of runs.
  • Speed - Speed of actions with and without ball.

Additional Coaching Points

  • Punch passes with intent.
  • Pick where you want to finish the ball and place it into a corner.

Progression

  • Introduce 2 defenders.

Creating Chances in the Final Third with Transition to Defend: Building from Winger (30 mins)

Objective

  • Creating and scoring goals in the final third.


Method

  • Green team in possession looking to create chances and score goals.
  • Red team defending in a low block with a view to preventing chances.


Orientation of Opposition

  • 1-4-4-1-1 low block shape.
  • Narrow and compact distances between and within units.
  • Move together.
  • Break fast and look to get behind opposition defensive unit when possible.
  • Look for passes into midfield, particularly into centre circle to get scores.


Orientation of Team

  • 1-4-3-3 formation.
  • Width and depth, making the pitch big to stretch the opposition defensive block.
  • Move the ball to move the opposition - punch the passes to cover that distance.
  • Looking at switches in play to isolate winger 1v1.
  • Trigger point for movement pattern - ST to come short, 10 to run in behind, 2 to overlap, 11 and 8 to get to box.

  • Timing of movements. 
  • Anticipate what is going to happen, be a step ahead.
  • Confident and clinical in front of goal.
