4v2 building out wave game (15 mins)

Exercise: 4v2 Wave Game

  • Setup: Divide the area into three grids. Each grid has four blue players, including a goalkeeper. Two lines of red players are positioned on the outside. One neutral player is in the middle zone. Coaches are stationed with balls on the sideline.

  • Instructions:

    • Coach plays the ball to the blue team in one grid.

    • Blue team attempts to build out and switch the play to the opposite grid.

    • As the ball enters the grid, one red player from each line presses the blue team.

    • If the blue team successfully switches, the coach plays a new ball into the opposite grid, and two new reds press that grid.

    • If a goal is scored or the ball goes out, the coach starts a new ball into the grid and rotates the pressing players.

  • Progression:

    • Add a defender to mark the neutral player, making it harder to switch the ball.

    • Reduce time for blue players to make decisions, forcing quicker build-up.

Key Coaching Points (KCP):

  • Build-up Shape: Maintain depth and width to create passing angles.

  • Ball Speed: Move the ball quickly and decisively.

  • Body Shape: Position yourself to play forward upon receiving the ball.

  • Defensive Pressing: Press and cover with intensity, forcing mistakes.

  • Awareness: Recognize the neutral player’s role and exploit the space they provide.

  • Transition: Respond quickly after losing the ball to regain defensive shape.

Activity 2:

Exercise: 5v3 Wave Game with Gates

  • Setup: Use the same three-grid layout as Activity 1, but add a gate at each end of the middle zone. Each team now has 5 players in each grid, and 3 red players press in each phase while the other 3 red players wait in the middle zone.

  • Instructions:

    • The blue team in possession looks to play a pass through either of the two gates into the waiting blue team on the other side.

    • The 3 red players in the middle zone then press the receiving blue team.

    • The previous pressing reds return to the middle zone.

    • The goalkeeper must touch the ball before switching to the opposite grid.

  • Progression:

    • Increase the speed of play by reducing time for each switch.

    • Introduce a rule where the blue team must use at least one wide player before playing through the gate.

Key Coaching Points (KCP):

  • Switching Play: Maintain composure and accuracy when passing through gates.

  • Build-up Timing: Use the goalkeeper to reset and ensure the play is balanced before switching.

  • Defensive Pressing: Reds should coordinate their approach, with one pressing the ball, one covering, and one cutting off passing lanes.

  • Transition Efficiency: Blues must quickly transition from receiving the ball to moving it forward through the gates.

  • Body Shape: Ensure players are ready to receive on the half-turn and play forward.

  • Communication: Both attackers and defenders should communicate effectively to maintain shape and pressure.

Activity 3:

Exercise: Normal 7v7 Game

  • Setup:

    • All teams play a 1-2-3-1 formation.

    • Standard field dimensions for a 7v7 match.

  • Instructions:

    • Teams compete in a normal game setting.

    • The first team to score two goals stays on, or if no one scores twice within four minutes, the winner at the end of four minutes remains.

    • Every restart comes from the scoring team’s goalkeeper.

    • If the ball goes out, the restart also comes from the goalkeeper.

  • Progression:

    • No additional progression for this activity, but continue emphasizing the key principles from earlier activities (build-up shape, pressing intensity, quick transitions).

Key Coaching Points (KCP):

  • Formation Structure: Ensure the 1-2-3-1 shape is maintained throughout the game.

  • Transitions: React quickly on turnovers—defenders drop to cover, and attackers press immediately.

  • Goalkeeper Distribution: Goalkeepers should aim for quick, accurate distributions to initiate play.

  • Build-up Play: Maintain depth and width, and use the entire field to find passing options.

  • Defensive Coordination: Press with intensity and ensure the second and third defenders cover effectively.
