Description

This practice encourage players to take advantage of space left by opposition when they lose the ball. The out of possession team should be aggressive with their pressing to win the ball back. On a possession regain ,the team should look to go forward first. This can be players making off-the-ball runs into the end zone, or the player in possession passing or dribbling forward to exploit space.

Roles and Responsibilities (25 mins)

Organisation:

11v11 Yellow- 3-5-2,Blue- 4-3-3

Learning Outcomes

1. Understand defensive roles and responsibilities within the system.

2. Understanding of when to show inside and when to show outside.

3. Recognise where to counter attack the opposition on transition.

Coaching points to:

 CFs

- When ball with GK both CFs split and mark 'half and half' between opposition CBs and FBs. This is to be in a position to press CB but also stop clipped ball into FBs

- When ball is played into CB, CF must look to show them inside into the midfield area where our bodies are

- When ball played into CB, opposite CF must tuck around and be ready to affect the switch but also be close enough to put pressure on opposition CDM

- If ball gets played into opposition FB then CF must drop down to stop the pass inside but encourage FB to go back to their CB

Coaching points to wingbacks

-Initially, need to stay narrow to provide balance in the midfield area

-Stay narrow to be in a position to affect the FB if the ball goes into them but also be in an area to affect the second ball should opposition go long, and CB wins the ball

-When ball played into opposition FB, WBs job to get out as quickly as they can to affect the FB

-Once they have gone out and put pressure on FB, their job is to show the ball down the line and not inside as allowing them inside opens up the play for the opposition and provides a switch for the FB

-Opposite WB must drop down into a position to stop potential switch but also pick up loose balls in midfield area

Coaching points to MFs

-Number 10 to track the CDM in and stop them getting on the ball from GK

-If ball played into CB then 10 must drop channel side of CDM in order to stop ball round corner into FB

-If ball is played into FB then 10 must drop deeper to stop pass inside and through midfield, if they can force the ball to CDM to then go and put pressure on and show back towards on goal then that is fine. Ideally, ball goes back to CB and we look to squeeze up the pitch as a team

-MF mark inside initially when GK has it

-Ball played into CB, again, MFs must mark channel side for outside MF and opposite MF tucks in to protect central areas and help to screen any passes into opposition CF

-If ball is played into opposition MFs then pressure instantly needs to be applied to them and force them back towards their own goal

-Key message is to always force wide when in MF areas and always protect central areas

Coaching points to CBs

-Starting positions marking inside and protecting the central space

-If ball goes long, then one CB goes and attacks it and the other two drop deeper to cover

-If ball is played into CB and opposition winger looks to move inside it is the responsibility of the outside of the back three to pick up this man

-If ball gets played into winger then it is vital that they don’t allow them to turn, need to apply pressure instantly and aggressively in order to force the player back towards their own goal

-Central CB is required to pick up opposition CF and any longer ball played into the channel it is their job to deal with it

-They must try and get a CM to drop in to screen a pass into opposition CF

-Opposite CB must tuck round to cover central CB

Coaching points to GK

-Get distances right when off their line.

-Be ready to sweep up any long balls over the top of the defence .

-Communication with back line to get distances right.

Attacking Transition (35 mins)

Coaching points:

- On transition when winning the ball back, the first look for any player has to be forward and into wider areas.

- The oppositon full backs have left space in behind them so the shaded areas on the outside of the CBs are areas that we need to look to exploit, this will mainly come from runs from the CFs as they will be the most advanced but can also potentially be runs made by the number 10, wingback or even deeper MF depending on positions they find themselves in on transition of the ball.

- Once the ball is played into these areas then the forward runs into the box are key; opposite CF needs to make the front post, number 10 runs around the back post and one of the CMs can make the edge of the box for the cut back

- To deal with a counter attack should we lose the ball, opposite wing back can make the edge of the area for second balls and we defend with a back 3, one wingback and one CM screening passes into the forward areas so we attack and defend with a 5:5 split.
