Football/Soccer Session (Difficult): 9/20 Dealing with Crosses

Technical Handling (20 mins)

Organization:

Set up as shown

1 GK and 4 servers

2 mannequin's if available

Instructions:

GK to take high ball/cross and distribute to mini goals

GK2 to take driven ball between mannequins then roll to wide server

GK then receive cross and distribute to mini goal

Find ball line and set quickly for shot from server 2

Repeat opposite side

All rebounds live

Coaching Points/Questions:

Balanced set position

Correct starting position - 45 degress

Assess the flight of the ball - 'Assessment second'

Quality of footwork - Drop step to cross over/shuffles. Be economical and as quick as possible

Load the jump and takeoff with inside leg

Head and eyes focused on the ball

Catch at highest point and land on both feet

Distribute quickly but accurately

Regressions/Progressions:

P- wide servers can play deep ball to second server

P- Wide servers can cut back to server 2 for early shot or 1v1.

MS Shot Stopping/Crosses (20 mins)

Organization:

Set up as shown - Minimal to no equipment

Server 1 wide outside of 18 yard box

server 2 can adjust his position so the GK has to find the ball

Instructions:

1. Driven serve

2. Roll to Opposite GK

3. Adjust across for shot or 1v1 from server 2

4. Movement back in line for cross from wide area

5. If held, shoot on opposite GK. If not, opposite GK shoots

Clean Catch/Save/Goal - 1 point

Save from rebound/Weak foot goal - 2 points

Clean sheet and goal on mini goal - 5 points

Coaching Points:

Balanced set position

Correct starting position - 45 degress

Assess the flight of the ball - 'Assessment second'

No wasted movements

Find and get in line with ball as quick as possible for shot
