Technical (Unopposed) - Passing in 2s (15 mins)

This activity is designed to have players learn basic passing technique with the inside of the foot while introducing several techniques for receiving by providing lots of repetition.

Set up

Players get into partners with one ball and go to one set of two cones set 8 yards apart. Players will stay behind their cones and will pass around the outside of the cones. Groups will alternate sides to work both feet.

Option 1

In partners at a close distance (in front of cone - approx 5 yards), player A passes the ball straight from right foot to their left. Player B then passes the ball on an angle from left foot to player A's left foot. Then player A passes straight again from left foot to partners right foot and so on.

Option 2

Behind cone, A controls with left foot and brings the ball across their body to their right foot. Then A passes to B who does the same sequence. After some time, coach will say switch and the ball goes in the opposite direction.

Option 3

Player A passes to the middle for player B to control with outside of foot to the same side as the foot they use. Then player B does the same sending the ball back to player A centrally to use the outside of the foot to move the ball with their first touch.

Progressions:

a ball each doing Option 2

a ball each doing Option 1 with only the straight pass option

1 ball passing 1 touch back and forth, other ball in a players hands to either toss back and forth.

Technical (Unopposed) - Passing With a partner Progression (15 mins)

Passing with a partner with cones now to make some additional movements.

1. Player A passes to player B who passes back to player A (set)

2. Player B moves to their right, receives the ball from A outside the cone, dribbles across the cone back inside and plays the ball back to player A.

3. A plays a one touch back to B who returns the ball and goes outside the cone to their left to redo the sequence on that side.

4. After both sides are done, the ball is again played 1 touch to player B who sets to A.

5. Then B backs up to the last cone behind them, receives the pass, dribbles to the other side of the cone to come back and do the sequence again.

After this is done a couple of times, change roles.

SSG - Break Out Rondo (20 mins)

Set-Up:

  • 4 mini goals
  • 4 flats or cones
  • 5 pinnies
Diagram Description:

Possession based small sided game with focus on counter-pressing; aim is to win possession back as quickly as possible, before the opposition can settle on the ball.

1. The drill starts in area (1) shown in the picture.

Red x 4 (in possession, trying to keep the ball. Score a point for every 5 passes.)
Black x 2 (trying to win the ball as quickly as possible in the small space)

2. Once the Black team win the ball, it then turns into a 6 v 4 rondo in area (2), with the black team in possession and the red trying to win the ball.

Team instruction:

Red x 4 (trying to win the ball back and score in the mini goals for a point)

Black x 6 (in possession, trying to keep the ball. Score a point for every 5 passes. Use progressions depending on skill level of group.

Considerations:
- "1 if you can, 2 if you must" try to move the ball quickly - know where you are going to pass before you receive the ball
- If the Red score in the mini goals, the game is reset to area (1)
- If the Black win the ball back before the Red can score in the mini goals, the 6v4 rondo continues

** Adjust the game for the skill level of the group ie. Div 2 plays 3 v 1 in the middle with 6 players on the outside so players have more success, or Premier A may be able to do 5 v 3 in the middle with 4 outside.

Progressions:
1. Unlimited touches

2. Max 3 touches
3. 2 touch
4. 1 touch
5. Change the amount of passes it takes to earn a point.

6. Add in a "consequence" for teams based on a number of passes or a goal being scored ie. burpies, push-ups, sit-ups, etc.

Technical (Unopposed) - Passing in a Circle (15 mins)

Set up:

  • If there is a center circle large enough for the whole group use that, otherwise make one with cones
  • Add a cone outside the circle on 4 edges

Description:

  • All players have 1 touch to pass to a teammate (2 touches depending on skill development)
  • After they pass, they must run around the outside cone to come back in
  • If the ball ever leaves the circle or if someone touches the ball twice, restart the timer
  • Time how long before a mistake and make up a time that we will do this until we stop (U11 we say 5 mins but have fun with it, say the world record is 5:36, can we beat that!)

SSG - 3 Line Game (15 mins)

Set up:

  • Grid is 15x15 boxes on the sides, 5/10 x 15 in the middle (size dependant on age and skill of players and how many players in the boxes).
  • Team divided into 3 teams. 2 on the sides and one in the middle.

Organization:

  • Coach plays ball to one of the teams on the sides.
  • Team in the middle sends defenders into the side grid (1 at first, build to 2 if ability allows).
  • Offensive team makes a set number of passes (3-5) and then the goal is to send the ball to the opposite side.
  • The pass to the opposite side can be through on the ground (remaining defensive players are permitted to intercept this pass) or over the middle group.
  • If they succeed then they score 1 point and stay where they are, defensive team then goes to challenge the ball on opposite side. If the defensive team wins the ball, they take the place of the attacking team and play continues as it started.

Details:

  • Shape of the attacking team (fill the box and be at good supporting positions)
  • Communication on offense
  • Proper body shape to receive the pass
  • Don't have to pass to opposite side after required number of passes, ensure the right opportunity

Coaching points (depending on level):

Attacking team:

- Proper passing technique

- Scanning for space, and teammates

- First touch away from pressure into space

- Body positioning to receive pass

- Off the ball movement to create passing angles

- Build passes (safe short to secure possession)

- Break passes (riskier through lines, need to be timed right)

- If 2 defenders closing, look to split

- Communication

- Use available space

Defending team:

- Speed to pressure the ball, slow when close to player

- Angle of run to try and force play one way. Teammates in the middle follow the play and shift as a team to cut off passing lanes. If second player

- Player closest to ball pressures, Second player covers.

Language:

- Man on, set

- Bounce it

- Turn

- Out the other way (switch)

- 1, 2

- Receive on the back foot

SSG - 3 Teams Possession (15 mins)

Set Up:

  • Divide your group into 3 teams.
  • Make the space appropriate for the age level and number of players you have.
  • 2 of the 3 teams are on offense, 1 is on defense.
Diagram Description:
  • Once the defense wins the ball, the color they won it from is now on defense and play continues.
  • Great for working transition from O to D and vice versa, also great for giving your offense time on the ball to learn to possess the ball.
  • Make it more challenging with limit of touches, number of passes for a point, must be a combination play, etc.

- 6 5x5 grids, make sure the middle grids are a different colour than the outside grids

- Extra balls with the coach at the halfway point of the pitch

- Split group into 2 teams

Diagram Description:

- Play possession game with the goals being the 5x5 grids on either side of the pitch

- Pass the ball through the front of the boxes for 1 point on the wide goals and 5 points for the middle goal

- Once the pass is played into the box, an attacker can receive the pass in the box, the defender cannot go into the space

* The attacker receiving the ball cannot wait in the box, they must time their run appropriately

- If the ball goes in between the boxes, restart with the defensive team

Details:

- Use hand to show your player what foot you want the ball to be delivered to

- Communicate turn, set, man on, etc.

- Check shoulder before receiving

- Receiving on the half turn

- Receiving on the back foot

- Play penetrating passes when the opportunity arises

- Weight of pass

*20x40 playing area*

Instructions:

  • To score you must pass the the ball to a teammate in the opposing team's endzone and they must stop the ball in the zone.
  • A player cannot wait in the endzone for a teammate to pass them the ball, they must time their run to receive the pass in the endzone (through ball - passing into space).
  • Defender cannot go in the endzone.
  • If a team scores ball starts from half. If a ball goes out, the players can grab the nearest ball on the outside to do a kick in (no dribbling focus on passing).
