Backline
We will be using the PRESSURE, COVER and BALANCE for our backline.
Whatever the side the closest of the 5/4 must become the PRESSURE. The PRESSURE person defends 1v1 VERY AGGRESSIVELY. I want they girls to be mean, aggressive and physical.
The further of the 5/4 slides in between the ball and the goal and is the COVER. they have 2 jobs. If the PRESSURE gets beat the COVER becomes the pressure. If the ball is centered they must be goalside of the ball and prevent a clean shot.
the 2 is this situation is the BALANCE. They are in the middle of the goal direclty across from the COVER. They must prevent any center ball from getting a clean shot. The 3 is the outlet and the ball will most likely be won on that side so that is the primary outlet for transition.
The same set-up if the ball is on the right side of the field.
ALL GIRLS MUST KNOW THIS AND BE ABLE TO DO IT WITHOUT THINKING. We always want 3 players betweent he ball and goal...PRESSURE, COVER and GOALKEEPER. If they can beat 3 players then they deserved the goal. If we only have 2 or 1 players between the ball and goal we made a mistake and the goal is our fault.

Formation: 2-3-1
2-3-1
This is our base formation we will run. It is a 2-3-1 (Goalkeeper is assumed that is why I don't say 1-2-3-1)
We will call positions by their name and number. As we get further only the numbers will be used.
This formation will lead into 4-3-3.
5/4) Defenders. They must be able to PRESSURE and COVER in our defensive thrid. They must be mean. On the attack they must be able to outlet the ball and support the attack in the middle third. This is a highly discipled position.
3/2) Outside mids. On defense they are the BALANCE. During transition they are the outlet and in the attack they must be able to score. the 3/2 will have the most running in a game.
8) Center mid. Required to trap or support in the defensive third. Must be able to creat (move the ball) in the transition without losing it. Must be able to score from in the box and at the top of the box. Must be able to read the game and adjust quickly.
9) Striker. Must be able to put the ball in the back of the net. Must also pressure the other teams defenders to make mistakes.
Overall System of play: My style is we will play a very sound/conservative defense BUT a very fast aggressive attacking offense. Our goal is to keep the ball in their half of the feild the entire game and attack, attack and attack.
