Receiving to half turn (10 mins)

Set Up

  • Players lined up on two sides of the area with goals opposite each line.
  • A square set up in the middle of the area.
  • Coaches positioned with balls so each group receives on a different foot.

Explanation

  • Coaches simultaneously pass the ball to the player at front of line.
  • Player receives the ball and plays a pass into the player in the square.
  • Player in the square receives and drives out of the square to shoot.
Coaching points

  • Nice firm pass into the square / can this be done in two touches?
  • Awareness - Player receiving in the square needs to have awareness of what is around them, where is the passing lane? where is the pocket of space? where is the other receiving player in the square?
  • Can the half turn be done at speed (relative to ability/age) and then bursting out of the square to shoot also at pace.

Extension

  • U11 & 12s could possibly have a second defender (like example B) who steps into the zone the ball is in to put pressure. Encouraging the middle zone players to find a passing lane.
