  • Half pitch practice tapered off at top end
  • 8 plus GK BLUE in possession
  • 6 plus GK RED out of possession
  • Attacking wide areas split into three boxes. Visualization to help attacking players.

Explanation

  • In possession- BLUE team will start with the ball on each restart. Looking to score in the big goal with highlighting the importance of attacking through wide areas.
  • Out of possession- RED team will look to score in the goal on halfway line upon winning possession. They are only a maximum of 10 seconds to score, looking for them to attack quickly.
  • Extra goal for scoring in wide channel
  • The colored areas in wide channels will help players understand how the scenario changes the type of cross needed.
  • BLUE area- Chip back post, bent cross, early cross. Decision on type of cross dependingon players positioning off the ball.
  • RED area - Pull back, low driven.

Progressions/Challenges

  • Progression on how to utilize 2v1 more effectively in wide areas
  • Types of runs and finishes in box
  • Adding goals for correct type of cross
  • Unopposed in wide channel boxes if success rate needs to be improved.

  •  Utilize wide channels and limit to a 2v1 for BLUE team in possession if needed
  •  Extra goals if scored from wide channel cross which was practiced in specific drill

Coaching Points

  • Be brave with the overload / numerical advantage in the wide areas and encourage the players to be creative in how the manipulate the defensive players.
  • Use the wide spaces as much as possible 
  • good decision making on when to cross the ball in 
  • different types of crosses including a low angled pass between the defenders
