Description

This session focuses on building from the goalkeeper to break a high press and then turning that progression into an attack on goal. Players begin with smaller build-up relationships between the GK, CBs, and CMs before progressing into a more realistic back-four build-up against an organized press. Once the press is broken, the session immediately shifts into attacking the big goal, challenging players to recognize when to accelerate, support forward, and create chances. If possession is lost or regained, players must react quickly and either defend the goal or build again.

5v3 to 5v5 Build Up Game35 mins

Activity 1 — 5v3 Build-Up into 5v5

Organization

Two identical setups, one in each half.

Red Build-Up Team

  • GK
  • 2 CBs
  • 2 CMs

White Pressing Team

  • 2 STs
  • CAM

Beyond the Press

  • 2 White players waiting higher up.

Mini goals are positioned at the opposite end for Red to attack if they regain during the transition phase.

Explanation

  • Every phase starts with the Red GK.
  • Reds build 5v3 against the two White strikers and CAM.
  • Red's objective is to break the press and find either of the two White players waiting beyond the pressure.
  • Once Red connects with one of those players, both White players enter immediately.
  • White now attacks the big goal in a 5v5.
  • Reds transition immediately from building to defending.
  • If Red regains possession, they look to build out against White's pressure and score in the mini goals.
  • Continue until goal, mini-goal, or ball leaves the area.
  • Restart from the goalkeeper.

Switch roles so both teams experience the build-up and pressing pictures.

Build-Up with GK

  • Create width and depth early — stretch the first line of pressure.
  • Use the GK as the spare player — don’t force forward when we can recycle.
  • CMs on different lines — avoid standing flat or hiding behind pressers.
  • Scan before receiving — know if you can turn, set, or play first time.
  • If you can’t turn, set — use the third player.
  • Drive to draw — if nobody presses, carry forward and force someone to engage.
  • Find the player the press leaves free.
  • Through, around, or beyond — recognize which route the opposition gives us.
  • If one side closes, switch the point of attack.
  • Pass with purpose — don’t circulate just to keep the ball.

Build-Up to Attack the Big Goal

Once the press is broken, the mentality should change.

  • Break pressure, then attack — don’t keep playing like we are still in the build-up.
  • First look forward after breaking the line.
  • Attack the space created behind the press.
  • Support underneath and beyond the ball — give the receiver forward and backwards options.
  • Create width around the box so the attack doesn’t become too central.
  • Use combinations to enter the final third — set, third-man, overlap, underlap.
  • Attack with numbers, but maintain balance behind the ball.
  • If the direct attack isn’t on, secure possession and build again.
  • Recognize when to accelerate and when to reconnect.

Activity 2 — 7v4 Build-Up into 6v7

Increase the numbers while keeping the same problem.

Organization

Again, use two identical setups, one in each half.

Red Build-Up Team

  • GK
  • Back 4
  • 2 CMs

White Initial Press

  • 4 players

White can organize the press as:

3-1

or

1-2-1

Beyond the Press

  • 2 additional White players waiting higher.

Explanation

  • Every phase starts with the Red GK.
  • Reds build 7v4 using the GK, back four, and two CMs.
  • Reds attempt to break White's first press and find either of the two White players waiting beyond it.
  • Once the pass is completed, both White players enter.
  • White now attacks the big goal 6v7, including the Red GK.
  • Red immediately transitions from possession into defending.
  • If Red regains, they attempt to build out through White's pressure and score in the mini goals.
  • White immediately counter-presses/high presses after losing possession.
  • Continue until goal, mini-goal, or ball out.

Switch roles regularly.
