Organisation (Layout)

Practice is set for 11 outfield players and 1 goalkeeper, bib up players on arrival ready for the small sided game at the end, 1 player on the 18 yard line and the other 10 outfield players all with a ball each queued behind the edge of the centre circle, a good supply of footballs needed to keep the session flowing.

Adaptations to the practice

(Progressions/Regressions/Challenges)

1. All players up on their toes ready to play, Player A starts by playing a side footed pass into player B and shout on which side they want the ball laid off, player B lays off the ball on the required side and player A will finish with a side footed shot on goal from in or around the edge of the area, player A now replaces player B as the layer and player B joins the back of the shooting queue, this continues for 10 minutes encouraging players to be brave and try to shoot with both feet.

2. Progressing the drill my assistant and me will now become layers, this time the players will play a longer pass striking through the ball with the laces to me or my assistant where we will roll the ball off for a left or right footed firm strike at goal with the laces from in or around the edge of the area, this time around though they fetch their own ball (as long as its safe, No children or adults climbing fences or running down roads after footballs) which adds a little more pressure on hitting the target, this continues for 10 minutes or until all players have had at least one strike at goal with each foot.

3. Final third of the drill my assistant and me are still layers, this time the players are still playing a long pass into us but instead of rolling the ball off this time we will bounce the lay off to set up a volley from in or around the edge of the area, with volleys its confidence and timing so key is to encourage players to relax keep a good eye on the ball try and keep their head over the ball to finish with a good shot at goal, continue for 10 minutes or until all players have had at least 2 turns.

Mechanics of Technique

1. Get body in position to strike

2. Angled approach

3. Non kicking foot alongside the ball

4. Head over the ball

5. Decide strike laces through or side foot

6. Follow through

7. Aim and strike.

Small Sided Game

First 15 minutes of the game I would set the challenge Volley or laces outside the box or a side footed first time finish inside the box = 2 goals to encourage the players to try what they had just worked on and then finish the session with the last 15 minutes free play, almost always after a shooting session players will leave happy its something keepers defenders midfielders and attackers all enjoy.

Outcomes

Players to learn the mechanics of Shooting

Players have practiced the different types of shooting

Players have learned how to adjust their body in order to make the best connection with different areas of the foot

Players are more confident in shooting
