Crossing From Red Zones (20 mins)

Organization:

- 5(7) cones.

- The 6th and 7th are for the second progression (including L/R Backs)

- 4 manequins to act as back 4.

- Balls all with coach on the top of the pattern

Instructions:

- Play starts with a pass into the striker from the coach.

- Striker choses to pass to either their #8 or 10, whomever they choose, that person squares it to their fellow midfielder who then sends a ball out wide to the winger on their side! (this is the first pattern of 3)

- All 4 (#9,8,10,&7 or 11) attack the cross coming in.

Coaching Points:

- As the person crossing, when you have the space between back 4 and keeper throw that ball along the ground between them (driven pass)

- As runners, do not get excited and go too early. Why? Too early and you end up just standing there easy to mark.

- As passers, make sure we get the weight and accuracy correct. Does passing to the correct foot matter? YES.

- If L/R Backs are narrow, pass outside of them. If L/R Backs are wide trying to anticipate the pass where do we put it?? Into the red zone BETWEEN them and the CB!!!

- 1 touch everything almost.

Progressions:

- There are multiple patterns you can do. I am starting simple with this top one.

- Then I'm moving to a pass into the midfielder, they pass to striker, ST gives it to MF that hasn't touched it, they then put a ball OVER the defenders into the redzone opposite of them. SO in the picture above, if the left Mid receives it, she plays over the top to the 7 (right side). And VISA VERSA.

- Last progression is when we add our L/R backs in overlaps. Same pattern as number 1 but instead of crossing first time, the #7/11 takes their first touch and drives inside (opening space out wide) and then playing the ball to their overlapping partner whomofwhich crosses first time to on coming attackers.

3v2 -> 4v3 Transition (20 mins)

Organization:

- Large Grid with two big goals. Players are seperated between the two goals.

- Two players (on the defending team) are placed on the blue cones out wide.

Instructions:

- Play starts as 3 v 2 (red vs blue) with the 3 having possession.

- The two wide blue players can join the play ONCE AND ONLY ONCE the ball is won by the two blues and PASSED to one of the wingers. (If it it goes to one, they BOTH join) Making it 4v3 until the ball is either scored or goes out off of blue.

Coaching Points: Commiting defenders to open spaces elsewhere

- If you are attacking numbers up, be patient and move the ball to best use your overload.

- If you are attacking numbers down, we must be direct as possible, break the defensive line as fast as possible once you win it.

- If you are numbers down and cannot immediatley break, retain the ball and get your numbers up (Passing to wide players in this case)

- Recognize when to stay central or overlap out wide (When would you over lap? When space is limited inside and your winger or CM or driving in field)

- Using different passing techniques

- Attack proper spaces when players are centering the ball.

Progressions:

- If defending team wins the ball back before the blues can find their wide help and score you get two points.

6 v 6 +4 (20 mins)

Organization:

- Two outside channels cut in half. Resting team has one person in each, neutrals for either team.

- In the middle it is 6 v 6 (5v5 + goal keepers)

- 4 minute games, winner stays on. If a team gets up by 3 goals they send the other team off the field early.

Instructions:

- Players have no restrictions other than that they cannot go into the channels but can block the pass in/out.

- Neutrals have 3 touches on the ball

Coaching Points:

- Emphasize now how a positive first touch to beat the first defender opens up so many options for you.

- Who can beat a player to commit other defenders and then find an open teammate?

- How important is it, as a wide player to have that positive first touch? Exremely

- Know what we want to do before we do it.

- How does the speed of our play dictate what the other team does?
