Session Objective:
In this session, I aim to improve my team’s ability to: Control possession in the middle third, to enable a structured build up to the forward third.
Team Task: Can we have effective possession in the middle third?
By focusing on: Player Tasks (General / Position-specific): 2,3,4,5 and 6,8, 10
Key Player Actions required to achieve tasks and objective:
Positioning/Movement without the ball
-2,3,4 & 5 spreading wide to make pitch ‘as big as possible’
-Rotation movement between 6,8 & 10 to create space in midfield
-8 & 10 attempting to receive ball facing forward or side on
Core Skills
-First touch
-Running with ball
-1v1
-Striking the ball
Communication
Coach
-Ensure TT is explained clearly
-Use of diagrams
-Model all practices before beginning
-Ensure ‘script’ is prepared
Players
-3 & 4 assist with dictating midfield
-6,8 and 10 communicate with each other to make space (e.g. rotating positions to lose opposition)
- 2 & 5 playing wide and assisting in M3

Explanation
-6 v 7 + GK (if only 14 players take away Yellow #3)
- Purpose of game is to get players thinking about how to create space in M3 when in BP.
-Yellow team always starts from GK
-Objective is to maintain possession, and play to attacking third to score a goal in either goals.
-Begin by restricting players into their respective zones to get them comfortable in their area
-2 & 5 stay outside and move along edge creating passing options
-Offside rules apply
Part 2
-After a suitable time, allow players to break into other zones to create an overload (i.e. BP team – when a pass is made into the next zone, only one player from BP team can join zone to ‘overload’. If possession is lost, return to zone immediately)
Team Task: Maintain and create effective possession.
Player Tasks/Actions:
-2,5,10,6 & 8 move without the ball to create space (making triangles)
-10,6 & 8 should be trying to create width and depth in middle zone to make the pitch ‘big’, and not congest each others space
-10,6 & 8, 2 & 5 should be trying to receive a pass facing forward
-3 & 4 receive the ball facing forward, playing quick balls into midfield or out wide
-2 & 5 create options on outside edge
-3 & 4 provide communication to midfield to help dictate play
-GK dictate communication, offer self as passing option from own team
Cues (To assist Perception, Decision, Execution):
-How can our midfielders move without the ball to create space?
-How can our midfield manipulate the opposition to create space?
-If there is congestion, how can we solve that problem? Can we play back to our defenders? What is paramount? (maintaining possession)
-What can 3 & 4 do to help dictate possession? What communication can they use?
-Can we use our GK to ‘reset’ our play?)
-Can our defending zone make a direct pass to our attacking zone? What is our priority?

Explanation
- 6 v 7 + GK
-Purpose of drill is to create effective possession in M3 from B3.
-GK always begins with ball
-Yellow team must work together to dribble the ball through one of the 3 goals in as much time as necessary
-When in BPO, yellow team must win ball back quickly
-When in blue team has BP, they have 10 seconds to score a goal
-Offside rules apply
Team Task: Create effective possession in M3, transitioning from B3, playing it forward through forward goals (F3)
Player Tasks/Actions:
-10,6 & 8 move without the ball to create space (making triangles)
-10,6 & 8 should be looking for space between defensive lines
-10,6 & 8 should be trying to create width and depth in M3 to make the pitch ‘big’, and not congest each others space
-2 & 5 spread wide in BP, and overlap into M3 to create an overload and width
-3 & 4 receive the ball facing forward, playing quick balls into midfield or out wide
-3 & 4 provide communication to midfield to help dictate play.
Cues (To assist Perception, Decision, Execution):
-How can our midfield move without the ball to create space?
-How can 2 and 5 be used to overload?
-How can our midfield manipulate the opposition to create space?
-If there is congestion on one side, how can we solve that problem? Should we switch play?
-What can 3 & 4 do to help dictate possession? What communication can they use?
-Can we use our GK to ‘reset’ our play?

Passing Practice (15 mins)
- Blue and Yellow players must pass to eachothers respective teams. Once you have made a pass, you move to find a spare cone to run to (Blue team is on red cones, Yellow team is on yellow cones).
- Red players stay outside box but pass to each other across the busy space.
- Switch outside players every 5 minutes
