Dribble & Drive Technique

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Overview:
Setup a squared area, with the size depending on how much you want to challenge players (the smaller the more difficult). Have one half of players start on a vertical side while the other half start on a horizontal side. Each team needs something to be called, such as a favourite team (Barcelona, Arsenal etc.), a colour or any random name they can come up with. When coach calls one of these teams they must dribble from their starting point to opposite line that is facing them. The quicker the coach shouts the teams the faster and more difficult becomes; with players having to weave to dodge others.
Coaching Points:
Eyes Up: Players should look to keep their eyes up in order for them to be able to see what space they have in front of them and how/what type of touches and turns they need to use as they travel around the area.Keeping their eyes up will also allow them to see the opposition as well.
Dribbling: Smaller touches with the laces will help the attacker to keep the ball close to their body but they may need to take bigger touches with their laces to move into space if it opens up for them to move into. Players should be encouraged to dribble with the ball on both feet using different surfaces of either foot.
Turns: As players approach the line players should be used to challenge a variety of different turns on both feet. As players turn, they should scan and check their shoulders to adjust the speed of their touch after they turn to move into the space. Players should use disguises to help feint for when they change direction as well.

Dribble & Drive Technique Circuit
Overview:
Setup 2 x 5 cones in a row with a distance of 7 yards between them. The player starts at the top of one row, dribbles in and out and then accelerates diagonally to the second row of cones to perform the same task. To progress add a mannequin in the middle for the player to perform a 1 v 1 move against. This practice is great for improving close ball control and manipulating the ball in tight areas.
Coaching Points:
Dribbling: The ball needs to remain close to their feet whilst moving through the cones so they can manipulate the ball quickly. If they cannot keep close ball control they will struggle to move around the cones and then drive out at pace. The player should use different parts of the feet such as inside, outside and sole to help support them with quick touches and movement.
Speed: The player needs to go as fast as possible after gaining confidence in the practice to challenge themselves but also replicate match speed. The coach can challenge the player further by timing them and encouraging them to beat their time at each attempt.
Eyes Up: Players should aim to dribble and drive with their eyes up as much as possible to see what is ahead. As players become more confident they will be able to manipulate the ball whilst keeping their eyes up.
