Activity II: Moves & Turns (15 mins)

1 vs. 1 Line Tracking Drill: Offense vs. Defense

Objective:
To develop offensive players' dribbling, turning, and movement techniques to unbalance defenders, while teaching defenders to maintain positioning and track movement effectively.

Setup:

  • Equipment Needed:

    • A variety of balls: regular soccer balls, futsal balls, and mini balls for progression.
  • Player Organization:

    • Pair players into offense (Red) and defense (Blue) roles.
    • Assign each pair a grid or defined space with clear starting lines.

How the Drill is Played:

  • Offense (Red):

    • The offensive player dribbles the ball, moving it from one side to another within the grid.
    • The goal is to force the defender out of their line through quick turns, changes in direction, and deceptive moves.
  • Defense (Blue):

    • The defensive player follows the movement of the offensive player, attempting to stay aligned in the same line as the offensive player.
    • The defender’s objective is to maintain proper positioning and avoid getting unbalanced.
  • Rotation:

    • After 1-2 minutes, switch roles so each player gets a chance to practice offense and defense.

Progression:

  • Different Ball Types:

    • Use regular soccer balls, futsal balls, and mini balls to challenge players’ adaptability with varying ball control demands.
  • Smaller Grid:

    • Reduce the grid size to increase the intensity and demand quicker decisions and sharper turns.
  • Add Time Pressure:

    • Offensive players have a set time (e.g., 10 seconds) to unbalance the defender and force them out of line.

Key Coaching Points:

For Offensive Players (Red):

  • Turning Technique:

    • Use inside, outside, or bottom (sole) of the foot to make quick, tight turns.
    • Practice changes in direction forward, sideways, and backward to confuse the defender.
  • Moves Technique:

    • Use "stop-and-go" moves and faints to simulate changes in speed and direction.
    • Dribble with control and keep the ball close to the body for quick adjustments.
  • Creativity:

    • Encourage players to experiment with moves and turns to find what works best against the defender.

For Defensive Players (Blue):

  • Positioning:

    • Stay balanced with knees slightly bent and weight on the balls of the feet.
    • Keep a safe but close distance from the offensive player to react quickly.
  • Focus on Ball:

    • Watch the ball, not the offensive player’s body, to avoid getting tricked by feints.
  • Lateral Movement:

    • Use quick, small steps to maintain alignment with the offensive player. Avoid crossing feet to stay balanced.

Benefits of the Drill:

  • Improves offensive players' ability to manipulate defenders through dribbling and turning.
  • Develops defensive players' positioning, focus, and reaction time.
  • Encourages adaptability with different types of balls and in various space sizes.

"Grab Soccer" Drill

Objective:
To improve offensive players' dribbling skills, decision-making, and ball control while teaching defensive players to apply pressure in a unique, challenging scenario.

Setup:

  • Equipment Needed:

    • A ball for each offensive player.
    • A clearly marked grid or playing area with defined start and end zones.
  • Player Organization:

    • Divide players into two groups:
      • Offense (Red): Players with a ball who attempt to dribble across the grid.
      • Defense (Blue): Players in a “crab” position (hands and feet on the ground, facing up).

How the Drill is Played:

  • Start of Play:

    • Offensive players start on one side of the grid with a ball.
    • Defensive players are spread out across the grid in a crab position.
  • Objective for Offense:

    • Dribble the ball across the grid without letting a defender in the crab position touch their ball.
    • If the ball is touched, the offensive player must return to the starting side and try again.
  • Objective for Defense:

    • Defensive players move in the crab position and try to touch the offensive players’ balls using their hands.
  • Rotation:

    • Switch roles after 5 minutes so every player gets the chance to play offense and defense.

Key Coaching Points:

For Offensive Players (Red):

  • Decision Making:

    • Recognize open spaces and adjust movement to avoid defenders.
    • Decide quickly whether to dribble forward, sideways, or backward based on defender positions.
  • Movement of the Ball:

    • Option 1 (Forward): Push the ball forward if the path is clear.
    • Option 2 (Side): Move laterally to find space or evade pressure.
    • Option 3 (Back): Retreat if needed to reset and find a better route.
  • Ball Control:

    • Keep the ball close to the body to maintain control and adjust quickly.
    • Use light touches and avoid overcommitting to a single direction.
  • Head Up:

    • Look up frequently to scan for defenders and open space while dribbling.

For Defensive Players (Blue):

  • Positioning:

    • Stay low in the crab position to maintain stability and mobility.
    • Spread out and work together to cover as much space as possible.
  • Timing:

    • Be patient and time your movements to intercept the ball effectively.
  • Communication:

    • Talk with other defenders to coordinate movements and trap offensive players.

Progression and Variations:

  • Smaller Grid:

    • Reduce the size of the grid to increase intensity and force quicker decision-making.
  • Add Obstacles:

    • Place cones or markers within the grid to simulate additional challenges for offensive players.
  • Time Challenge:

    • Challenge offensive players to complete the grid within a set time limit (e.g., 15–20 seconds).
  • Crab Tag Bonus:

    • If a defensive player touches the ball twice in a row, they can stand and act as a regular defender for the rest of the round.

Benefits of the Drill:

  • Enhances dribbling and ball control under pressure.
  • Improves decision-making in real-time scenarios.
  • Strengthens defenders’ spatial awareness and teamwork.
  • Adds an element of fun and physical challenge for both offense and defense.

Activity V: Small Side Games (15 mins)

Small-Sided Games: 4 vs. 4

Objective:

To develop players' technical skills, decision-making, teamwork, and competitiveness in a dynamic and engaging small-sided format.

Setup:

  • Fields and Teams:

    • Create 2 fields suitable for 4v4 games.
    • Divide players into 5 teams of 4 players each.
    • Use pug goals or set a rule for players to score by dribbling through a line to create a goal.
  • Rotation Rules:

    • When a team is scored on, they leave the field, and the team waiting on the sideline takes their place.
    • The scoring team stays on the field.

Game Rules:

  • Matches are played 4 vs. 4 with standard small-sided game rules (e.g., no goalkeepers).
  • Games are played until one team scores. The first team to score stays on the field as the winner, while the losing team rotates out.
  • If you have a limited number of players, adjust game duration (e.g., 3–5 minutes) and rotate teams regardless of the score.

Variations/Progressions:

  • Winner Stays:

    • Add a competitive element where the team that stays on the field the longest is declared the overall winner.
  • Dribbling Goals Only:

    • Players can only score by dribbling through a designated line, emphasizing ball control and creativity in attack.
  • Time-Limited Matches:

    • Play 3-minute matches regardless of scoring, and rotate teams at the end of the time.
  • Add Challenges:

    • Introduce restrictions, such as limiting touches (e.g., 2-touch max) or requiring a pass before scoring.

Coaching Points:

  • Offensive Focus:

    • Encourage quick decision-making, movement off the ball, and creative play to create scoring opportunities.
    • Emphasize proper spacing to maintain possession and exploit gaps in the opposition.
  • Defensive Focus:

    • Teach players to defend as a unit, close down space, and apply effective pressure on the ball.
    • Highlight the importance of recovering quickly after losing possession.
  • Teamwork and Communication:

    • Reinforce the importance of working together, communicating clearly, and supporting teammates on both attack and defense.
