Description

  • Block Theme: We want to improve players' ability to go 1v1.  The ability to unlock the game in a 1v1 moment is critical to the team's success towards attacking the opposition's goal.
  • Session Outcome: Once regaining possession, can we guide our defender who has won the ball to continue the 1v1 duel, rather than kicking the ball away?
  • Core Skills: 1v1 and RWTB.

Skill Intro: Get Across Untouched (15 mins)

ORGANISATION:

  • Set up 2 groups as shown in the diagram with 2 teams split on either side. The first working players will be in the corner zones.
  • Players are playing against their direct opponent (AvA and BvB) and must get to the opposite side without being tagged.
  • Reset practice when the actions are done. Players return to their starting positions.
PROGRESSION:
  • Introduce the ball with the same objective. One team will attack first while the other team defends. Then swap roles.
  • If the defenders regain possession of the ball, they can look to score in either mini-goal.
COACHING POINTS:
  • How can you trick him/her? - encourage players to take on an opponent.

  • Go past them and accelerate away - encouraging the player to receive and go 1v1 to score.

Skill Game: Numbers Game (15 mins)

ORGANISATION:

  • Set up two teams diagonally across from each other.
  • Split the groups in half, get the players to allocate themselves a number between 1-5. If you have odd numbers, allow two players to share the same number.
  • Coach calls out a number, and those two players enter the field in a 1v1 duel.
PROOGRESSION
  • Call out more than one number to make it a 2v2 or 3v3.
  • SO CHANGE IT - the number called now represents the number of players entered for each team (i.e., blue 2, red 3). This creates a 3v2 overload or underload situation.
COACHING POINTS:
  • How can you trick him/her? - encourage players to take on an opponent.

  • Go past them and accelerate away - encouraging the player to receive and go 1v1 to score.

SSG: Must dribble to progress (20 mins)

ORGANISATION:

  • The attackers must dribble over each third. Scoring a goal by beating a player 1v1 and then scoring is worth 3 points.
  • The defending team (red) starts in the middle third while the blues start the possession. They can press after a pass is played.

  • The team that scores can restart with the ball. If the ball goes out, re-start at the opposite end.

PROGRESSION:

  • Add neutral player(s) to create an overload in possession.
  • Restrict the defenders to start in either third when the ball re-starts.

COACHING POINTS:

  • How can you trick him/her? - encourage players to take on an opponent.
  • Go past them and accelerate away - encouraging the player to receive and go 1v1 to score.

  • Pele/Neymar - encourages feints, skills and turns to beat a defender.
